The last shooting guard I am going to look at in my series of NY Knicks trade articles is Victor Oladipo. In order to be realistic about the required compensation for Victor Oladipo, we need to understand the market for him. But it doesn’t mean that I think the NY Knicks should pay it, just understand what it is. It’s up to you the fan to decide if you think it’s worth it. A good example is Gordon Hayward’s free agency. Most Knicks fans were on board with signing him until Charlotte came offering 4 years/$120M.
While Oladipo is considered the second-best shooting on the market after Bradley Beal, I don’t see Houston getting as many competitive offers for him as Buddy Hield and Evan Fournier’s teams will get for them. The main reason for that is the uncertainty of resigning Oladipo.
NY Knicks: Who’s The Competition For Oladipo?
Everyone knows that Victor Oladipo wants to play in a major market, so small market teams know he is just a rental for them. He reportedly already turned down an extension offer from the Houston Rockets. Then there is the money, he wants to get paid, especially after recovering from a career-threatening quad injury at age 26. For those reasons, he is a riskier acquisition than Hield or Fournier. With that said, let’s take a look at what the best offers might be for Oladipo in order to understand what the Knicks would need to offer.
Bradley Beal</a>, I don’t see Houston getting as many competitive offers for him as <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2021/03/23/ny-knicks-3-best-trade-offers-victor-oladipo/"https://dailyknicks.com/2021/03/17/ny-knicks-3-trades-for-buddy-hield/">Buddy Hield</a> and Evan Fournier’s teams will get for them. The main reason for that is the uncertainty of resigning Oladipo.</p>

<div class="details"> <div class="team-name">Mavericks Get</div> <div class="info">Victor Oladipo</div> </div> </div> </div> </div>
</div>
<p>The Mavericks would offer Tim Hardaway Jr. who is on an expiring contract, rookie guard Tyrell Terry, and a 2021 2nd round pick. While Hardaway is the better player, the true asset in the deal is Terry. As most Knick fans remember, Hardaway wasn’t as good for the orange and blue as he’s been for Dallas. The reason is simple, in Dallas he plays with Luka Doncic. Even with improved offensive numbers, Hardaway knew better than to opt-out of the last year of his contract which pays him <strong>$19M</strong>. It’s for the same reason he was included in the Kristaps Porzingis (KP) trade as a salary dump, at best he is a fringe starter on a good team. The Rockets would only take Hardaway back because he’s on an expiring contract.</p>
<p>As for draft capital, Dallas doesn’t have much left since the Knicks own two of their next three 1st round picks. It will look really bad if this year’s 1st round draft pick turns into a lottery ticket for the Knicks. So the best they can offer is a 2nd round pick this year. They don’t control their 1st or 2nd round pick in the covet 2023 (double) draft, so they can’t be offered at this time.</p>
<p>As for the young prospect, Tyrell Terry was projected to be a 1st round pick that went 31st overall, in the 2020 draft. The Stanford product needs to grow into his body in order to be an effective NBA player, he only weighs 160Ibs on a 6’2″ frame. But his college stats are impressive as he averaged 14.7 ppg on 40.8% three-point percentage and 89.1% from the free-throw line.</p>
<p>But what is encouraging has been his performance in the G-League <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2021/03/23/ny-knicks-3-best-trade-offers-victor-oladipo/"https://thesmokingcuban.com/2021/02/21/mavericks-tyrell-terry-diverse-g-league/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">where the Smoking Cuban reported</a> that he has proven he can run the point and play off the ball as a spot-up shooter. They have compared him to former Maverick Seth Curry. While I don’t think the trade will happen, as I don’t see Houston wanting to help their in-state rival, it does serve as a baseline for what other teams will have to offer.</p>
<div class="next-slide slider"> <a class="next-slide-btn" style="background: #007BC1" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://dailyknicks.com/2021/03/23/ny-knicks-3-best-trade-offers-victor-oladipo/"#"> <span class="title">Next:</span> Atlantic division rival wants Oladipo </a>

They are probably smelling blood now that <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2021/03/23/ny-knicks-3-best-trade-offers-victor-oladipo/"https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/31102023/frustrated-lebron-james-leaves-home-game-los-angeles-lakers-first-half-right-ankle-injury">LeBron James is hurt</a> and out indefinitely, joining Anthony Davison on the shelf. After suffering through the “Trust the Process” years and then seeing the team take a step back last season after Jimmy Butler left unexpectedly. The Sixers have bounced back this season thanks to Daryl Morey’s personnel moves and Doc Rivers’ coaching.</p>
<p>While the Sixers are an elite defensive team, this is still an offensive league, so they need to find more firepower. Philly needs another ballhandling playmaker to ignite their offense. Ben Simmons can get downhill, but scoring is not his game. Joel Embiid needs help closing games by having someone that can create a shot when the offense gets bogged down. That is why the Sixers will be in discussions for every marquee wing on the market.</p>
<p>The 76ers have reason to believe that Oladipo would resign with them. Philadelphia is a big market team that plays not too far from Oladipo’s hometown in Maryland. They have star players, a respected coach and front office, as well as an ownership group that will spend money. Below is what I believe will be the 76ers best offer for Olapido.</p>
<div class="fs-shortcode" data-type="Trade" data-team-ids="[169,93]" data-team-gets="[["Danny Green","Isaiah Joe","Tony Bradley","2021 1st Rd Pick"],["Victor Oladipo"]]"
> <div class="playertrade remove-native-227"> <div class="trade"> <div class="team a"> <div class="logo"><img src=https://dailyknicks.com/2021/03/23/ny-knicks-3-best-trade-offers-victor-oladipo/"https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/fetch/w_75,h_75,c_fill,g_auto,f_auto/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.fansided.com%2Flogos%2Fnba%2Frockets.png"/>
<div class="details"> <div class="team-name">76ers Get</div> <div class="info">Victor Oladipo</div> </div> </div> </div> </div>
</div>
<p>This trade offer is similar to the one proposed for Evan Fournier except Tony Bradley replaces Furkan Korkmaz as the Rockets need more size than shooting. Danny Green is included since he is on an expiring contract. Rockets could also flip Green before the deadline for additional assets. Houston also gets a promising guard in <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2021/03/23/ny-knicks-3-best-trade-offers-victor-oladipo/"https://section215.com/2021/01/25/philadelphia-76ers-isaiah-joe-disappear/">Isiah Joe</a>, the rookie out of Arkansas has shown he can play, but is buried on the depth chart of a good team.</p>
<p>The true value will be the 1st round pick in this year’s draft. With this trade, the Rockets will end up with four 1st round picks in a deep draft. There is a good chance they lose draft position even though their 1st has a top 4 protection from a swap with OKC. They currently have the 2nd worst record in the NBA which leaves them with a <strong>47.9%</strong> chance of picking outside the top 4.</p>
<p>If that happens they will end up with Miami’s 1st round pick. If Portland makes the playoffs, then their 1st round pick goes to Houston. They also have Milwaukee’s 1st due to a pick swap from the P.J. Tucker trade. So Houston will have the following picks: Portland, Milwaukee, Philly’s, then either a top 4 or Miami’s. The value of Philly’s pick is that it gives Houston more ammo to move up in the draft or to trade picks for veteran players.</p>
<p>As for Morey, he has never valued draft picks or drafted well. So with the team being in win-now mode, he will gladly part with picks for a star player.</p>

<h2>NY Knicks: Miami is biggest threat to sign Oladipo</h2>
<p>The last team the NY Knicks need to worry about is their biggest threat. The Miami Heat are one of the best organizations in the NBA and play in one of the most desirable cities. While most teams in the Heat’s position would probably wait until the offseason, their team president doesn’t think that way. Pat Riley is running out of opportunities to win another championship. He just turned 76 years old and will likely retire within the next couple of seasons. He wants one more ring to cement his legacy.</p>
<p>But Riley doesn’t have absolute power anymore, there are now leaders within the Heat organization that have a say. Since the Heat believe they have a strong shot to sign Oladipo in free agency, I don’t see them breaking the bank at the trade deadline. Below is what I feel will be their best offer.</p>
<div class="fs-shortcode" data-type="Trade" data-team-ids="[169,110]" data-team-gets='[["Trevor Ariza, Avery Bradley","KZ Okpala","2025 1st Rd Pick (protected)","2022 2nd Rd Pick & 2024 1st Rd Pick Swap"],["Victor Oladipo"]]'> <div class="playertrade remove-native-227"> <div class="trade"> <div class="team a"> <div class="logo"><img src=https://dailyknicks.com/2021/03/23/ny-knicks-3-best-trade-offers-victor-oladipo/"https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/fetch/w_75,h_75,c_fill,g_auto,f_auto/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.fansided.com%2Flogos%2Fnba%2Frockets.png">
<div class="details"> <div class="team-name">Heat Get</div> <div class="info">Victor Oladipo</div> </div> </div> </div> </div>
</div>
<p>This trade package for Victor Oladipo would include Trevor Ariza and Avery Bradley for salary matching purposes. A young player in KZ Okpala who was the 32nd pick in the 2019 draft. He hasn’t played much with Miami due to injury and the depth of talent on the team. He is still a decent prospect since he is only 21 years old.</p>
<p>Then there is a 1st round pick in 2025 (top 10 protected), the earliest they can offer because of the Stepien Rule. A late 2nd round pick in 2022 due to prior trade, and a 1st round pick swap in 2024 when Houston gets Brooklyn’s 1st round pick. The Rockets only accept this offer if Oladipo makes it clear that the only team he will resign with is the Heat.</p>
<p>Aside from Riley (the Godfather), the Heat have another ace up their sleeve. Heat legend Dwyane Wade has mentored Oladipo, as both played for the same college coach, Tom Crean. Pat Riley and the Heat will try to force Houston’s hand since they have the cap space to sign Oladipo outright in the summer.</p>

<h2>NY Knicks: Oladipo has friends in New York</h2>
<p>We finally get to the NY Knicks’ offer. New York, just like Miami feels they are the front runners to sign Oladipo in the offseason. While Miami is a glamourous market with great weather and no state income taxes; the Heat doesn’t have the same connection points with Oladipo as the Knicks do.</p><div class="widget fs_ads"> <div class="fs_ad_widget-ad" style="margin:0 auto; width: 300px;"> <div class="fs-ll-ad" data-ad-type="minutemedia_slideshow_inline_300x250__desktop__tablet" data-vendor="minutemedia">

<p>The more I review the potential trade possibilities the more I am convinced that Victor Olapido will land in New York. In the NBA relationships matter, and Olapido has some deep ones in the Knicks’ front office. GM Scott was the assistant GM in Orlando when the team drafted him. Leon Rose was his agent before becoming President of Basketball Operations.</p>
<p>It’s no coincidence that two of Scott Perry’s former Orlando 1st round draft picks have played for the Knicks, Mario Hezonja and Elfrid Payton. Acquiring Olapido is Perry’s best shot at saving his job. The Knicks wouldn’t let Perry go before Victor Oladipo resigns with them. Who knows, maybe Oladipo flexes his power to ensure he keeps an ally in the front office.</p>
<p>As for Rose, getting a former star client to come to New York in his first year on the job would validate his hiring. The little criticism he does get from the New York media would dissipate. It would also set the Knicks up nicely to build a contender as they would now have two all-star caliber players in Olapido and Randle. They also have another budding one in Barrett and a promising young player in Quickley.</p>
<p>Just like the Fournier situation, it benefits the Knicks that Olapido is on an expiring contract and on a team that is not a contender. He has the leverage to push for a trade to New York as they have the cap space to sign him as a free agent. If your Houston, it’s better to get something for him now than let him walk away for nothing, especially since he was part of the James Harden trade. Below is what a trade for Victor Olapido might look like.</p>
<div class="fs-shortcode" data-type="Trade" data-team-ids="[169,27]" data-team-gets='[["Frank Ntilikina","Iggy Brazdeikis","2024 1st Rd. </div>
<p>The Knicks are forced to include either Frank Ntilikina or Kevin Knox in the trade for salary matching purposes. Since Knox is younger, still under contract, plays in the frontcourt, and has the Kentucky connection. I think the Knicks choose to keep him. They also include Iggy Brazdeikis, who is a 2nd year forward that hasn’t been able to get on the floor. He was projected to be a 1st round pick, so when he slipped to the 2nd round, Scott Perry spent $1M to trade up to draft him.</p>
<p>In this trade, Houston gets two young players to try out this season instead of just the one Miami is offering. They also get a 2nd round pick in the most desirable draft, 2023(double draft), better than the late 2nd round pick Miami is offering in 2022. Then New York includes a protected 2024 1sr round pick (top 10 protected), one year sooner than what Miami can offer, so more valuable. The Knicks can include a pick swap if Houston insists. The key is that New York has two 1st round picks and three 2nd round picks in the 2023 draft, so they can afford to part with picks in 2023 and 2024 to secure Oladipo.</p>
<p>While I don’t like the compensation necessary to secure a player the NY Knicks can sign for free, it feels like the Carmelo Anthony trade all over again. I can understand why Leon Rose would be hesitant to let Oladipo meet alone with Pat Riley, Dwyane Wade, and the Heat in the offseason. It’s better to be safe than sorry.</p>
