There are other options outside of Brunson too, and while some make sense for the Knicks, others don’t. It should also be mentioned that free agents won’t be able to be signed until the first of July, which will be a little over a week after the 2022 draft.
New York’s front office may decide to draft a point guard and one would assume that if that happens, the Knicks won’t be willing to spend a large sum of money on one in free agency.
Nonetheless, the 2022 free agent point guard class is worth delving into. Frank Urbina of HoopsHype compiled a list of the top point guards who are set to be free agents this summer, so let’s go through this list to determine which players New York should be interested in.
First up is an Atlanta Hawks point guard, but not the one that you’re thinking about. Delon Wright wrapped up his first season in Georgia with an average of 4.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 77 games. He shot 45.4% from the field and 37.9% from the 3-point line.
The 30-year-old guard signed a three-year, $28 million contract with Memphis in 2019, so he’ll be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Wright operated as Trae Young’s backup in Atlanta, which is what he’d continue to do elsewhere because he hasn’t been a starter since he joined the league in 2015.
As it stands, there’s no way to know who will be the starting point guard for the Knicks in 2022-23. After Derrick Rose was injured this past year, Alec Burks took over the starting role, while Immanuel Quickley and Miles McBride didn’t get to see the court as often.
Adding Wright into the guard mix isn’t something that New York needs to do. Wright has the experience, but the Knicks don’t need to spend money on a backup guard when their roster already consists of players who can do the job.
New York Knicks are expected to add a point guard during the offseason, whether it be via the draft, free agency, or a trade. The most popular option among fans seems to be Dallas Mavericks’ Jalen Brunson, who will be an unrestricted free agent if he isn’t re-signed.

10: Delon Wright: Atlanta

First up is an Atlanta Hawks point guard, but not the one that you’re thinking about. Delon Wright wrapped up his first season in Georgia with an average of 4.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 77 games. He shot 45.4% from the field and 37.9% from the 3-point line.

(Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) – New York Knicks

9: John Wall (player option)

John Wall hasn’t played in over a year. After playing in 40 games for the Houston Rockets in 2020-21, both sides mutually agreed to find a new home for the five-time All-Star.

Wall’s known for the nine seasons that he played with the Washington Wizards, but that chapter of his life came to a close when he was <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/07/new-york-knicks-top-10-nba-point-guard-2022-free-agent-targets/"https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/30439266/sources-houston-rockets-washington-wizards-agree-russell-westbrook-john-wall-deal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">traded to the Rockets in Dec. of 2020 with a first-round draft pick in exchange for Russell Westbrook. Before that, Wall hadn’t played since two years earlier due to an injured Achilles tendon and knee.

At the age of 31, especially given Wall’s injury history and the amount of time that’s passed since his last competitive game, it’d be a huge risk to bring the guard to New York.

There’s also the fact that he has a $47.4 million player option for 2022-23, which <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/07/new-york-knicks-top-10-nba-point-guard-2022-free-agent-targets/"https://nba.nbcsports.com/2022/04/14/report-john-wall-exercising-47m-player-option-with-rockets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he’s reportedly going to exercise. Why wouldn’t he? It’d make him the second-highest player in the NBA next year.

That amount of money makes it even more difficult for the Knicks to trade for Wall. It’s unfortunate that his career has taken this turn, and while he could help New York, the Knicks already have Rose on the roster, who also struggles with staying healthy.

Wall’s leadership would be valuable for players like Quickley and McBride, but it isn’t worth it, which is why he remained in Houston for the entirety of the 2021-22 season.

Verdict: Hard pass

<a class="next-slide-btn" style="background: #007BC1" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/07/new-york-knicks-top-10-nba-point-guard-2022-free-agent-targets/"#"> Next: An NBA champion

8: Patty Mills (player option)

Patty Mills is fresh off his first season with the Brooklyn Nets, although it didn’t go as he hoped that it would. The 33-year-old went from being a notorious sixth man to starting in a career-high 48 games due to Kyrie Irving’s extended absence.

Because of that, his production took a dip about midway through the year. Mills averaged 11.4 points and shot 40.8% from the floor (the lowest for him since 2015-16) and 40% from the 3-point line.

Mills signed a two-year, $12 million deal with Brooklyn last summer after spending a decade in San Antonio. He has a $6.2 million player option for 2022-23.

It seems as if he wants to remain with the Nets, so the belief is that he’ll opt into it. However, if he doesn’t, New York should consider adding Mills to the roster, especially if Evan Fournier is traded during the offseason.

The Nets misused Mills in 2021-22, and when his energy tank isn’t ran dry, he’s a valuable off the bench perimeter shooter. While the Knicks don’t need a backup point guard, the Australian native’s shooting is what makes him a possible free agency target.

His leadership and experience as an NBA champion under Coach Popovich would be a bonus to New York’s young team.

Verdict: Pursue

7: Gary Payton II

Gary Payton II has been on five teams since he entered the league in 2015, but he’s in the midst of his best season with the Golden State Warriors.

The 29-year-old played in a career-high 71 games during the regular season and averaged 7.1 points and 3.5 rebounds. He shot 61.6% from the field and 35.8% from the 3-point line. Payton’s been a spark for the Warriors in the playoffs, including a clutch 15-point performance against the Nuggets to close out the first-round series.

After playing in 10 games for Golden State in 2020-21, Payton was waived by the Warriors but was then brought back a few days later and signed a one-year, $1.9 million deal.

Payton elevated himself from Golden State’s 15th man to a starter in the Western Conference Semifinals against the Memphis Grizzlies, but sadly he’s out for the next month or so with a fractured elbow that he suffered in Game 2.

He’s no Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, or even Jordan Poole, but he does a lot of the little things that you can’t get from a stat sheet.

He’s outplayed his less than $2 million contract and the Warriors should look to re-sign him during the offseason, but if that doesn’t happen, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.

Payton wouldn’t be able to replicate the success that he’s had in San Francisco with the Knicks. He wouldn’t be a starter for New York either. Although his grit would be welcomed, especially by Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks don’t have a current need to pursue him in free agency.

6: Dennis Schroder

Dennis Schroder passed up a four-year, $84 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers last summer and instead chose to sign with the Boston Celtics on a one-year, $5.9 million deal. He was hoping that by doing so he’d be offered a large sum of money in free agency this summer, but that isn’t going to happen.

The 28-year-old was traded to the Rockets in February, so he didn’t get the chance to be part of the Boston Celtics’ playoff run. In retrospect, Schroder should’ve stayed in Los Angeles because while he’ll garner attention as an unrestricted free agent, he won’t be making around $20 million annually.

In the 29 games that Schroder played in for the Celtics before being traded, he averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 assists, and 3.3 rebounds. He shot 44% from the floor and 34.9% from the 3-point line.

Schroder wouldn’t be a bad backup point guard option, but as it’s been mentioned, New York doesn’t need another backup. He’d serve the same purpose as Rose and would take up space on the bench. Schroder has the potential to be valuable elsewhere, but not with the Knicks.

The last thing that the front office needs to do is go out and sign yet another veteran point guard, as the signing of Kemba Walker is still fresh on the minds of many New York fans.

5: Tyus Jones

There’s one specific reason why the Memphis Grizzlies went 20-5 in games played without Ja Morant during the regular season, and that reason is Tyus Jones.

Jones is Memphis’ backup point guard and i<a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/07/new-york-knicks-top-10-nba-point-guard-2022-free-agent-targets/"https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask?q=tyus+jones+starter+stats+2021-22%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">n the 23 games that he started in during the regular season, he averaged 12.7 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 45% from the field and 39.6% from deep.

Overall, the 25-year-old averaged 8.7 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.4 rebounds in the 73 regular-season games that he played in.

Jones signed a three-year, $26.4 million contract with the Grizzlies in the summer of 2019 after the Minnesota Timberwolves failed to match the offer. And things couldn’t have worked out better for him because there’s a chance that he’ll get a shot at being a starting point guard in the NBA once he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

He’s young and he won’t require teams that are interested in him to break the bank. If Brunson re-signs with the Mavericks, or with another team, the Knicks should take a look at Jones.

His youth is key and he played under Thibodeau in Minnesota, so he’s familiar with the coach’s system, <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/07/new-york-knicks-top-10-nba-point-guard-2022-free-agent-targets/"https://nba.nbcsports.com/2018/06/17/report-minnesotas-tyus-jones-considered-asking-for-trade-thibodeau-eased-concerns/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">although based on their past, Jones may not be interested in a reunion. Nonetheless, New York should monitor Jones’ situation as a free agent.

would be to buy his contract out and that’s a scenario that the Knicks should still be cautious about.

Yes, New York could sign a point guard in free agency, but it shouldn’t be Westbrook. He’s coming off an extremely tough season with the Lakers, one that was supposed to result in his first NBA title. That didn’t work out according to plan, huh?

Westbrook isn’t washed, but his fit with Los Angeles couldn’t have been any worse. He averaged 18.5 points, the lowest for him since his 2009-10 season in Oklahoma City. At first, it seemed as if he was just having a rough transition, but it lasted for the entirety of the year.

Reportedly, the <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/07/new-york-knicks-top-10-nba-point-guard-2022-free-agent-targets/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/01/latest-russell-westbrook-rumor-breath-fresh-air-new-york-knicks-fans/">Knicks aren’t interested in trading for Westbrook. That’d be an insult to young players like Quickley and McBride. Although Rose has had issues with staying healthy, he’d be a better starting point guard option for New York.

Hopefully, Westbrook is able to find his fit with another team so that he can get back to being himself on the court. But that isn’t going to happen with the Knicks.

2: Jalen Brunson

Ah, much better. Out of the 10 players on this list, Brunson is the one who the majority of fans want to see come to New York this summer.

The 25-year-old’s performance in the first round of the playoffs, especially in the games without Luka Doncic, has upped the value of the contract that he could sign if he doesn’t re-sign with Dallas.

If Brunson becomes an unrestricted free agent, he’s expected to receive a deal in the four-year, $80 million range. To be able to offer that amount of money, the Knicks will have to trade away a few players to clear cap space, but it can be done.

He averaged 16.3 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds in the 79 games that he played in for the Mavericks during the regular season. Brunson shot 50.2% from the field and 37.3% from the 3-point line.

In the playoffs, <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/07/new-york-knicks-top-10-nba-point-guard-2022-free-agent-targets/"https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/jalen-brunson-2022-playoff-stats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the point guard’s averaging 23.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists while shooting 45.5% from the floor.

If Dallas <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/07/new-york-knicks-top-10-nba-point-guard-2022-free-agent-targets/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/30/mavericks-reportedly-willing-jalen-brunson-sign-trade-deal-knicks/">continues to be unwilling to part ways with Brunson in a sign-and-trade deal, the Mavericks could lose him for nothing. And hopefully, it’d be to New York because he’s the only point guard that the front office should be interested in acquiring during the offseason.

Verdict: PLEASE PURSUE
