Although the team may possess some viable options on the roster already, that being Derrick Rose or Immanuel Quickley, neither have proved to be the permanent solution at the Knicks’ most coveted position. A possible solution for New York could be Indiana Pacer’s Malcolm Brogdon.
Last season, the Pacers made it known the team was looking to sell in hopes of retooling the roster with new talent. Trade rumors surrounded Indiana’s cornerstones, such as Domantas Sabonis, Caris LeVert, Myles Turner, and Brogdon.
The two former players successfully found new homes before the trade deadline, but the latter two remain tangible trade assets for the Pacers during the offseason.
It’s extremely plausible to believe that New York would be among the clubs to call about the availability of these two, as Brogdon (guard) and Turner (center) could both be legitimate upgrades at positions the Knicks may want to improve on.
Optimism remains that New York will be able to retain Mitchell Robinson in free agency, and if so, I would not expect them to pursue Turner. I would, though, foresee them making an effort to land the 2017 NBA Rookie of the Year.
New York Knicks will continue to search for their starting point guard this offseason, after bringing in Kemba Walker <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/10/new-york-knicks-execute-trade-point-guard-malcolm-brogdon/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/02/23/kemba-walker-new-york-knicks-agree-rest-season-shutdown/">proved to be a failed experiment last year.

the Knicks’ best point guard over the past decade was 39-year-old Jason Kidd or Rose in his second stint with the team. That right there is a fundamental issue for the franchise, one that they have not been able to find a solution for in recent years.

Quickley had some tremendous games at the end of last season, but a couple of months prior he had looked like a shell of the electric spark plug he was creating a resume of being.

It was enough to gain the support of many in New York that he should be the Knicks’ premier guard, but his inconsistency makes many wary of his longevity over an 82-game season.

Rose has been phenomenal in his second stint in New York, but Tom Thibodeau’s historic overuse and reliance on Rose sidelined him again with another ankle injury last season.

This was hopefully enough to show the Knicks the days with Rose logging 30+ minutes a night may be over, and he cannot be considered a long-term solution at the point guard position.

Brogdon has steadily continued to improve as a player, after being a sleeper winner of the Rookie of the Year award with the Milwaukee Bucks. The now 29-year-old guard would bring some increased veteran presence to a squad with a lot of young talent.

Although his three-point and scoring ability may not be as explosive as Quickley’s, he’s extremely serviceable from beyond the arc, shooting 38.8% in 2020. Brogdon has averaged over 15 points per game every season since 2018, most recently averaging 21.2 and 19.1 points in each of his last two seasons, respectively.

He’s a good playmaker, averaging over 5 assists per game every year since 2018, something that would take a lot of pressure off RJ Barrett as he looks to take another big leap next year.

He also competes on defense, something the Knicks prided themselves on during their 2021 playoff stint. Brogdon was a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year in college.

The New York Knicks need a player like Malcolm Brogdon

New York desperately needs a true point guard, and Brogdon is that. He is a consistently good scorer, a solid playmaker, and a respectable defender, which is everything that a team covets in a starter. He is statistically an All-Star candidate and would spread the Knicks’ floor tremendously.

In several games this season fans saw an off-ball player as New York’s primary ball-handler. Imagine an offense where Barrett, Quickley, and Alec Burks could actually play to their strengths and be in the right spots.

Imagine the end of point-forward Julius Randle that lead to so many isolation post-ups that we fans grew to love so much!

With Brogdon, the Knicks would find their answer at point guard and could finally begin to develop at their other positions in the right way. He is less risky than another draft pick trial, and as good a player as you can get at the position. He is a tremendous upgrade for New York, no doubt.

#2: What it will take to get Malcolm Brogdon

Indiana traded arguably the face of its franchise in Sabonis <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/10/new-york-knicks-execute-trade-point-guard-malcolm-brogdon/"https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33244860/indiana-pacers-sacramento-kings-work-six-player-trade-includes-domantas-sabonis-tyrese-haliburton-sources-say" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to acquire budding star Tyrese Haliburton.

Haliburton, essentially, is exactly the kind of player Brogdon is, with a lot more potential to be great.

The Pacers were unable to move Brogdon due to the extension he signed with the club before the deadline, so he remained with the team while rehabbing an injury.

With the team looking to sell and retool, it is unlikely that Indiana is frothing at the idea of paying $22 million over the next three seasons to a player who will arguably stunt the production of the player they just traded tremendous value for.

With Haliburton becoming the new face of the organization, the squad is set at guard. But they lost a major player at the power forward position.

It’s good for the Pacers that the Knicks have a high-caliber, All-Star level player who’s similar in money to Randle. He did himself no favors in his tumultuous 2021-2022 season in New York, while Obi Toppin simultaneously seemed to find his groove late in the year.

The combination of these two catalysts spiked rumors the Knicks would ideally like to move on from Randle, similar to the situation that would allude to the idea the Pacers may want to move on from Brogdon.

What could a Malcolm Brogdon trade look like for the New York Knicks?

I don’t think a strong argument can be made in favor of either player as far as who is better. Both are similar statistically, under similar contracts, and close in age. Both players find themselves in positions where there is a young stud looking to take their position, with play styles that are too similar to be complimentary.

This could be a rare situation where the teams could do a one-for-one swap, a trade that fills a need for both teams and does not cost them more than it should. Both teams are already on the hook to pay both players above $22 million, so the salaries do not drastically change things for their cap outlooks.

Both franchises are simultaneously rebuilding while still looking to compete, so this trade does both. It brings fresh new talent to both teams while keeping the status quo on their asset tables as far as draft stock, veterans, and young talent.

It provides a unique opportunity for both teams to fill the exact need they covet while retaining everything they have been working for in the past seasons. It may be the exact answer both teams are looking for.

Brogdon comes with some injury risk, but he immediately upgrades New York’s most needy position overnight. The Knicks kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, as they off-load the distressed Randle and get their point guard at virtually no extra costs.

This is not to say <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/10/new-york-knicks-execute-trade-point-guard-malcolm-brogdon/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/09/knicks-rumors-new-york-reportedly-interested-free-agent-point-guard-tyus-jones/">there will not be other, better options this offseason, but simply an argument for a player and situation I believe could be extremely beneficial for New York. Regardless of who it ends up being, look for the Knicks to pursue some solution at point guard as we enter the preliminary days of the summer of 2022.
