To no surprise, the Knicks are expected to have a busy offseason, full of good and bad. Mitchell Robinson hasn’t signed a contract extension and if that doesn’t happen by the end of June, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. That’s something that fans don’t want to see happen.
On the other hand, New York could say goodbye to a couple of its offseason additions from last year, as well as other players. Regardless of where you stand on what moves the team needs to make this summer, the front office has plenty of work to do in the coming months.
What would the offseason look like if Knicks fans got to be in charge? On that note, let’s dive into a fans’ dream summer.
New York hasn’t had a star point guard in so long and while there are fans who’d like to see the Knicks bring in one via a trade or free agency, there are some who are against that. Why? Because of players like Immanuel Quickley and Miles McBride.
Regardless, players like Jalen Brunson and Donovan Mitchell have been tied to New York. The Knicks landing a big name during the summer isn’t a new concept. In fact, its whats kept the hopes of fans afloat after numerous disappointing seasons.
Brunson will be 26 in August, so while he’s closer in age to Julius Randle than RJ Barrett, he still has plenty of basketball left in him. This year, he’s averaging 16.3 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds in the 77 games that he’s played in. Brunson’s shooting 50.3% from the field and 37.2% from the 3-point line.
If New York builds around Barrett, can you imagine what the Knicks would look like with a legitimate point guard like Brunson? That’d be some of the most beautiful basketball that fans have watched in ages.
As mentioned earlier, Quickley might have what it takes to lead New York, but fans wouldn’t object to the Knicks signing Brunson.
New York Knicks. After making it to the playoffs last year as the fourth seed in the East, New York’s back towards the bottom of the totem pole.

Will the New York Knicks be able to land point guard Jalen Brunson?

Because of Mitchell’s contract and the fact that he hasn’t requested a trade, him joining the Knicks during the offseason is more far-fetched than Brunson doing so. The <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/09/new-york-knicks-4-things-fans-want-happen-during-offseason/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/03/21/knicks-rumors-jalen-brunson-is-teams-top-offseason-priority/">current Maverick is set to become an unrestricted free agent in July.

3: Signing Mitchell Robinson to an extension

Robinson possibly not signing an extension with New York and becoming a free agent at the beginning of July is a sore subject for New York fans, as it should be.

The 24-year-old was picked by the Knicks in the second round of the 2018 draft. In his fourth season, he’s averaging 8.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. Robinson’s shooting 76.1% from the floor.

Will Mitchell Robinson and the New York Knicks agree to an extension?

Not only can he finish at the rim, but he can protect it, too. If fans could have it their way, Robinson would be back with New York next year. However, the simple fact of the matter is that he could make more money with another team. The center’s been linked to Detroit, Oklahoma City, and Dallas.

If June 30 comes and goes without Robinson signing an extension, he’ll garner plenty of interest as soon as the clock strikes midnight on the first of July.

The last update between Robinson and the Knicks was that the two sides would <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/09/new-york-knicks-4-things-fans-want-happen-during-offseason/"https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10028143-woj-mitchell-robinson-knicks-continue-to-discuss-contract-extension-ahead-of-fa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">continue to discuss a possible extension leading up to free agency. With New York being days away from the offseason, expect those talks to ramp up.

Imagine if Barrett were to get a maximum rookie extension and Robinson were to agree to an extension. The future of the Knicks would actually be… promising.

2: A new team for Julius Randle

How did things get to this point? From All-Star to no longer being New York’s star, Randle’s time at the top didn’t last long.

It was <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/09/new-york-knicks-4-things-fans-want-happen-during-offseason/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/03/31/julius-randle-laughs-rumors-requested-trade-new-york-knicks/">rumored that the 27-year-old had requested a trade, but after the Knicks’ 125-114 loss to the Hornets on Mar. 30, he laughed that rumor off. Randle maintained the stance that New York is where he wants to be, but he hasn’t done much to prove that.

Will the New York Knicks trade Julius Randle during the offseason?

Sure, the 27-year-old averaged 20.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in his 72 starts with the Knicks this season. Randle shot 41.1% from the floor (the lowest for him since he played in one game in 2014-15 and shot 33.3%) and 30.8% from the 3-point line.

Last year, he shot 45.6% from the field and 41.1% from beyond the arc. This season is arguably Randle’s worst since he elevated his game to a new height in 2018-19 with New Orleans.

Ahead of last Saturday’s game against Cleveland, The Athletic’s Fred Katz <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/09/new-york-knicks-4-things-fans-want-happen-during-offseason/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/04/julius-randle-rest-new-york-knicks-season-happened-perfect-time/">reported that Randle would likely be out for the final five games of the season due to quadriceps soreness.

It’s an issue that’s been bothering him so it makes sense for him to be sidelined, even though it’s been speculated that he’s sitting out because <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/09/new-york-knicks-4-things-fans-want-happen-during-offseason/"https://www.si.com/fannation/nba/fastbreak/news/after-the-new-york-knicks-lost-to-the-charlotte-hornets-julius-randle-was-asked-if-he-demanded-a-trade-from-the-knicks-based-on-a-report-from-the-new-york-post-los-angeles-lakers-new-orleans-pelicans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he no longer wants to play for New York.

If there’s one thing that people should know about the NBA, it should be to expect the unexpected. Given the Knicks’ season, a Randle trade wouldn’t be necessarily unexpected, but if you’re solely going off his word, it would be.

I’m not sure what needs to be done to rekindle Randle’s relationship with New York. If the damage is beyond repair, perhaps he’d truly be better off with another team.

His four-year, $117 million extension that he signed before the start of the year hasn’t kicked in yet, so it won’t be an easy task to find a suitable trade (if it does come down to that).

there are also reportedly people within the Knicks organization who aren’t in support of the coach.

It seems harsh to give Thibodeau the boot two years in, especially after the success that he experienced last year, but it’s not a good fit. New York has ample young talent and Thibodeau doesn’t seem to properly know how to use it to the team’s advantage.

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, though, but the 2021-22 Knicks season has been full of dead grass. If Thibodeau does stay, the front office needs to sit down with him and be firm about the direction that the organization needs to head in. Spoiler alert, it needs to go in the opposite direction of this year.
