Breaking news: We’ve entered the single digits. In nine days, the 2023 NBA trade deadline will be here. For New York Knicks fans, that realization should bring both anxiety and relief. The Knicks have been wrapped up in a few trade rumors, but there’s still no way of knowing what the front office is planning to do.
New York could be buyers at the deadline with players like OG Anunoby coming to mind, but the team will likely part with a couple of players between now and Feb. 9, too. The Knicks could surprise us all and deal a player like Obi Toppin, but although Indiana has reportedly expressed interest in the 24-year-old forward, it’s not a given that Toppin will be traded.
What players are finishing their final full month with the Knicks?
However, if one had to pinpoint two players that the Knicks will deal ahead of the deadline, it’s relatively easy to think of two that will almost certainly be traded. No, one of the players isn’t Evan Fournier, although if New York is lucky, one desperate team will be willing to take on his contract as the deadline creeps closer.

2. Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose entered the 2022-23 season fully healthy after playing in only 26 games in 2021-22, but it’s been exactly a month since he last played in a game for the Knicks. On Dec. 31, he played 11 minutes in New York’s 108-88 win over Houston.

Since then, Rose’s name has been brought up in trade rumors, with teams like the Mavericks coming to mind. Dallas signed Kemba Walker in late November but <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/01/31/2-knicks-players-ending-final-full-month-trade-reddish-rose/"https://dailyknicks.com/2023/01/08/kemba-walker-news-knicks-mavericks-trade-rose/">waived him in early January so that his contract wouldn’t become guaranteed. Unlike Walker’s issue with his knee, Rose isn’t dealing with any lingering injuries, so he could be a player that the Mavericks trade for ahead of the deadline.

Knicks want to “do right by” veteran favorite Derrick Rose in trade talks

On Jan. 14, <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/01/31/2-knicks-players-ending-final-full-month-trade-reddish-rose/"https://marcstein.substack.com/p/weekend-dose-of-nba-trade-intel?sd=pf%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marc Stein reported (subscription required), “Sources say that New York is open to finding a new home via trade for former MVP Derrick Rose, but only if it can, as one insider put it, “do right by” the longtime Thibodeau favorite.” If Dallas can get Luka Doncic some help, Rose could play a role in a deep playoff run for Dallas if that’s where he ends up.

Regardless, the Knicks no longer have a need for Rose with players like Quentin Grimes, Immanuel Quickley, and Deuce McBride receiving more minutes this season. Rose can be a contributor elsewhere, though, which is why all signs are pointing toward him leaving New York sometime over the next week.

1. Cam Reddish

Cam Reddish is wasting away on the Knicks’ bench. It’s been nearly two months since he appeared in a game for New York on Dec. 3. The Knicks have dealt with injuries since then that have called for Evan Fournier and Derrick Rose minutes, but Reddish has continued to reside on the bench.

It’s been over a year since the front office sent a protected first-round pick and Kevin Knox to Atlanta in exchange for Reddish, and since then, it’s been difficult to figure out <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/01/31/2-knicks-players-ending-final-full-month-trade-reddish-rose/"https://dailyknicks.com/2023/01/26/3-ways-knicks-handled-cam-reddish-situation-better/">why New York traded for him in the first place. After having a promising few games as a starter earlier this season, Reddish hasn’t been able to reclaim his spot in the rotation.

Knicks have received interest from several teams on a Cam Reddish trade

According to<a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/01/31/2-knicks-players-ending-final-full-month-trade-reddish-rose/"https://www.sny.tv/articles/knicks-mailbag-trade-deadline-cam-reddish-derrick-rose" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> SNY’s Ian Begley, the Knicks “have several standing offers from teams for Cam Reddish” that include second-round picks going to New York. The Bucks and Heat have expressed interest in Reddish, but Begley wrote that he’s heard from two teams that are “weighing two factors.” Those two factors are wanting to see Reddish play in a game as well as considering the fact that he’s set to be a restricted free agent in the offseason. Whichever team trades for him will need to be willing to pay him, or else there’d be little reason to trade for a player that hasn’t played in two months to only play in the last 30 or so games of the season.

It certainly hasn’t helped that Reddish has been sidelined for the past eight weeks. He could’ve at least gotten some time on the court when the Knicks were dealing with injuries, but instead, Thibodeau has opted to play Fournier. Reddish has a higher chance of being traded than Fournier, but it’s still hard to see New York’s decision behind not playing Reddish at all.

But with Reddish still being only 23 years old, a team could end up getting a steal for a low price. It’ll come down to being able to give him a new contract over the summer, but even then, the former lottery pick has still been labeled the likeliest Knicks player to be traded.

Seeing Cam Reddish go will be bittersweet, especially given the way that he’s been handled in New York, but it’s what would be best for him and the Knicks since the team has proven that he isn’t in their long-term plan.
