2: Brown has experience playing 3×3 for USA Basketball
Charlie Brown Jr. was part of the inaugural FIBA 3×3 Americup in 2021 and took home the MVP trophy for the event. He led all scorers with 41 points en route to winning the gold for the United States.
Brown was named to the 2022 November World Cup Qualifying Team, where the United States finished 1-1. He competed for USA Basketball at the 2023 3X Nationals this past May in Colorado, and he was named MVP after scoring a team-high eight points in the championship.
At the end of June, Brown competed for Team Washington DC (one of Team USA’s 3×3 World Tour Teams) at the Orleans Challenger in France, where the team finished in sixth place. He also competed at the Poitiers Challenge in France.
If the United States qualifies for the 2024 Summer Olympics, Brown could be on the roster.
2023 Summer League squad isn’t as exciting as the ones from years past, but Charlie Brown Jr. has easily stood out as the team’s best player.

Jaylen Martin had the game-winner in the Knicks’ first Summer League victory on Wednesday against the Magic, but Brown led the way with 19 points, six rebounds, four blocks, and two assists.

In New York’s previous two losses, Brown combined for 28 points (12 against Philadelphia and 16 against Brooklyn), so he’s averaging 15.6 points. At 26 years old, he’s one of the older players at Summer League, and his past experience is helping him to stand out in Vegas.

3 things to know about Knicks’ Summer League star Charlie Brown Jr.

3: Brown attended Saint Joseph’s College in Pennsylvania

Charlie Brown Jr. is from Philadelphia and attended St. Joseph’s College for three years before he declared for the 2019 NBA Draft. As a freshman, he averaged 12.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 31 games, good enough to be named to the 2016-17 Atlantic 10 All-Freshman Team.

He fractured his wrist in practice before the start of the 2017-18 season, and although it was thought that he’d be sidelined for <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/07/14/3-things-know-knicks-summer-league-star-charlie-brown-jr/2/"https://sjuhawks.com/news/2017/10/25/211674998.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">only a few weeks with the injury, Brown missed the entire season. The bone healed slower than expected, and Brown had no choice but to use a medical redshirt.

Brown entered the 2018-19 season as a redshirt sophomore and averaged 19 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.1 steals in 32 games while shooting 43% from the floor and 35.6% from three. He made quite the leap from his first season at St. Joseph’s and was named to the 2018-19 All-Atlantic 10 Second Team.

After his third year at St. Joseph’s, Brown declared for the 2019 NBA Draft.

1: Brown went undrafted in 2019 and has played for four different teams

After a solid comeback season at Saint Joseph’s, Charlie Brown Jr. declared for the 2019 NBA Draft. He went undrafted but signed a two-way contract with the Hawks. Brown appeared <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/07/14/3-things-know-knicks-summer-league-star-charlie-brown-jr/2/"https://www.espn.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/4066508/charlie-brown-jr" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in only 10 games for Atlanta toward the beginning of the 2019-20 season before he was signed by the Timberwolves in December 2020.

Brown was waived by the Timberwolves a few days after and signed with the Iowa Wolves in January 2021. A few months later, the Thunder signed Brown to a 10-day contract, which led to another 10-day contract from Oklahoma City. He then signed a multi-year deal with the Thunder toward the end of the 2020-21 season but was waived before the 2021-22 season began.

After returning to the Iowa Wolves, Brown was traded to the Delaware Blue Coats in October 2021. He spent a couple of months in Delaware before being signed to a 10-day contract with the Mavericks in December 2021. Shortly after he went back to the Blue Coats, he signed a 10-day contract with the Sixers, his hometown team. A few days later, Philadelphia signed him to a two-way contract.

Fast forward to the 2022-23 season, Brown was back in Delaware with the Blue Coats and he helped the team win the G League Championship.

Brown has already had quite the journey in the NBA, but perhaps his showing at Summer League will lead to another contract, whether it be with the Knicks or another team. The three games that he’s played in Las Vegas thus far have caught people’s attention, so hopefully he’ll get another chance to sign with a team in 2023-24 after spending the entire 2022-23 season in the G League.
