Knicks Rumors: New York will retain Scott Perry as general manager
According to a recent report, the New York Knicks will be retaining Scott Perry as general manager on a one-year contract. He’ll receive a trial run under Leon Rose.
The New York Knicks are preparing for an offseason that will go a long way towards determining the trajectory of a promising young core. There have been rumors that the new front office will pursue a trade for a star, with just as many speculating that the team will go the Draft route.
Regardless of what the Knicks choose to do, a recent report reveals that one of the lead decision-makers will be an incumbent: Scott Perry.
Perry has held the general manager position with the Knicks since July of 2017. With Leon Rose replacing longtime New York executive Steve Mills as team president, however, questions inevitably arose as to whether or not Perry would remain in his current role.
According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, the Knicks have chosen to retain Perry on a one-year deal that will keep him in the general manager role through 2020-21.
This comes on the heels of a report that the Knicks planned to keep Perry on board as the lead decision-maker for the 2020 NBA Draft.
Although not quite unprecedented, this is a rare example of a new regime providing an acting general manager with the opportunity to prove their long-term value to a franchise. Perry has done a solid job, but that’s often disregarded when a new team president takes over.
Oftentimes, fresh faces clean house and bring in a staff that they’re familiar with, rather than building new relationships with those in significant roles.
Perry will have a chance to prove that he and Mills were separate entities, however, and he’ll attempt to start doing so at the 2020 NBA Draft.
Perry has done well at the NBA Draft during his time as general manager, selecting RJ Barrett in 2019 and Mitchell Robinson in the second round in 2018. With the Knicks slated to have another top-10 draft pick, the hope appears to be that his success will continue.
Perry will also have a chance to make his mark in free agency, with Rose’s long reach of resources seemingly at his disposal.
Nothing is set in stone beyond 2020-21, but Scott Perry will reportedly return as general manager of the New York Knicks.
