Josh Hart did New York a favor by exercising his $12.9 million player option for 2023-24 that allowed the Knicks to sign Donte DiVincenzo. He became extension eligible on Aug. 9, and that same day he and New York were finalizing a four-year, $81 million extension.
The extension makes him ineligible to be traded for six months, which won’t be until after the trade deadline. Even if he could be traded, a lot would have to happen for the Knicks to reach that point. After being moved the past two deadlines in 2022 and 2023, Hart will without a doubt still be on the roster once the deadline passes.
When Hart arrived in New York this past February, it was as if he had been part of the city all along. The Knicks won nine straight games after Hart debuted on Feb. 11, including two games against the Celtics and one against the Heat. He finished the regular season averaging 10.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, shooting an absurd 58.6% from the floor and 51.9% from three.
The upcoming season will be Josh Hart’s first full season in New York, and it shouldn’t be his last. The Villanova connection is only getting started.
could hit the market by February.

Evan Fournier is the likeliest player to be traded between now and the deadline. In an interview with French media outlet L’Equipe, he put Knicks management on blast and clarified that he doesn’t want to be in New York for another season. His $18.9 million salary for 2023-24 could be used in a trade for a star, whoever that may be.

On the flip side, a few players on the roster likely won’t be traded midway through next season. One of those players can’t be traded until after the deadline, but he probably wouldn’t be on the move anyways.

3 Knicks who will still be on roster after 2024 NBA trade deadline

3: Julius Randle

As a Knicks fan, you either love Julius Randle or despise him. How fans feel about him doesn’t matter when it comes to his future in New York. Randle is held in high regard by the front office, and the four-year extension he signed in 2021 is good value.

Yes, Randle is coming off a playoff performance where he had only a few good games. However, he was dealt a bad hand when he sprained his left ankle at the end of the regular season and then sprained the same ankle again in the first round of the playoffs.

He was far from the player that he was in the regular season, but part of that blame can be placed on the ankle that required him <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/08/16/3-knicks-still-on-roster-after-2024-trade-deadline-hart-brunson-randle/3/"https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/37787199/sources-knicks-julius-randle-successful-ankle-surgery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to have surgery this offseason.

Randle’s attitude was also a concern in the postseason, which can’t be attributed to his ankle. It was disheartening for Knicks fans to watch him seemingly give up on several plays. Overall, though, he looked like a different player than he did the season before, both mentally and physically.

Randle is vital to New York, and unless something major changes, he’s one player who should still be on the roster once the trade deadline passes.

2: Jalen Brunson

The only way Jalen Brunson would be traded before the deadline would be if the world ended. Even then, the Knicks would do everything they could to keep him on their roster. In all honesty, Brunson is set to be in New York for a long time.

The four-year, $104 million deal he signed in free agency last year was an absolute steal for New York, although it wasn’t labeled as one initially. There were doubts from outsiders about how good he could be for the Knicks, but Brunson defied all expectations. He averaged a career-high 24 points (his previous career-high was 16.3 in 2021-22) to go with another career-best 6.2 assists per game.

Brunson was New York’s best and most consistent player in the playoffs, which shouldn’t have come as a surprise given his success in the postseason when he was in Dallas. In the Knicks’ second-round series against the Heat, where there wasn’t much going right, Brunson was the lone bright spot.

Leon Rose would instead trade any other player than trade Jalen Brunson. The star point guard is the future of New York.
