After trading Cam Reddish, Svi Myhailiuk (who is now on the Hornets), and Ryan Arcidiacono to the Trail Blazers in exchange for Josh Hart, the New York Knicks have two roster spots open. Now that the trade deadline has passed, it’s time to look at the buyout market.
There’s a list of players that are expected to be bought out, with Russell Westbrook being the most notable name after he was part of the Lakers-Jazz trade. The Clippers and Heat have been linked to the former MVP. Most buyout players are looking to join a contender (several already have), but that doesn’t mean that the Knicks are out of luck.
For the Knicks, there are two players in particular that the organization could pursue after they agree to a buyout with their current teams. New York is No. 7 in the East, only a half-game back from Miami. With the team’s sights set on making it back to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons, these two players could help the Knicks make a push in the postseason with their championship experience.

landing spot for the 33-year-old veteran. Mitchell Robinson has been sidelined since he fractured his thumb against the Wizards on Jan. 18. He underwent surgery on Jan. 19 and there hasn’t been an update on when he will return, although James Dolan did say a couple of weeks ago that he would be out for another four weeks.

Robinson is expected to return sometime after the All-Star break, but the Knicks could pursue Ibaka on the buyout market for injury insurance. He has championship experience and could step in when needed.

Ibaka appeared in only 16 games for Milwaukee this season, averaging 4.1 points and 2.8 rebounds in 11.6 minutes. He isn’t the player that he once was, but he’s an option that New York should explore nonetheless. Hopefully Robinson won’t have to deal with another injury after returning, but that’s something that the Knicks should still be prepared for.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Bryn Forbes, who is one of the players elaborated upon in this article, was arrested on Wednesday, hours after this article was published, for allegedly assaulting a woman. He should no longer be considered a buyout option for the Knicks due to the serious nature of the allegations.

1: Bryn Forbes – Minnesota

Do the Knicks need another guard, especially after acquiring Josh Hart? Not necessarily, but because Bryn Forbes can shoot the ball, he’s a buyout candidate that New York must consider.

Forbes’ career started with the Spurs in 2016 and since then he’s hopped around to the Bucks, back to the Spurs, the Nuggets, and the Timberwolves. The 29-year-old was <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/02/15/2-nba-champions-knicks-consider-buyout-market/"https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10064967-report-bryn-forbes-waived-by-timberwolves-after-trade-with-lakers-jazz" target="_blank" rel="noopener">waived by Minnesota on Thursday and appeared in only 25 games this season, averaging 3.6 points. His best season came with San Antonio in 2018-19 when he averaged a career-high 11.8 points on 45.6% shooting from the floor and 42.6% shooting from three.

His stint with the Timberwolves didn’t go as hoped, but Forbes is a career 41% three-point shooter. With the Knicks no longer being able to rely on Evan Fournier, Forbes could be an option to come off the bench.

Similar to Ibaka, Forbes is an NBA champion. He averaged 10 points and shot 47.3% from the field and 45.2% from three in 70 games with the Bucks in 2020-21. With Terrence Ross agreeing to a buyout and planning to sign with the Suns, Forbes is a shooter that New York needs to consider. Maybe he’ll be able to land on two feet wherever he ends up next.
