The New York Knicks sit at .500 after the first month of the 2022-23 season, which is exactly where many assumed they’d be. After not trading for Donovan Mitchell over the summer, the Knicks remain an average team.
Speaking of trades, the February deadline is three months away. It’s already evident that the Knicks need to make a couple of deals if only to help free up space at guard. New York has Cam Reddish, Quentin Grimes, Immanuel Quickley, Derrick Rose, and Evan Fournier vying for minutes. Fournier’s been rightfully excluded from the rotation, but trading him will be difficult because of his contract.
SNY’s Ian Begley reported earlier this week that the Knicks have already started to get calls from other teams about Quickley, which isn’t surprising. According to Shams Charania (subscription required), New York has “shown a willingness” to listen to offers for both Quickley and Rose. Out of the two, the Knicks could get more in return for IQ, who is 11 years younger than Rose and has yet to reach his full potential.
3 teams that could hurt Knicks fans by trading for Immanuel Quickley
3: Washington Wizards
There’s one Eastern Conference team that should’ve already picked up the phone to inquire about Immanuel Quickley, and it’s the Washington Wizards. With the team in need of a point guard, Quickley becoming available via trade would be a dream come true for the Wizards.
Washington entered the offseason in pursuit of a point guard and traded for Monte Morris a few days after the 2022 NBA Draft. The Wizards converted Jordan Goodwin’s Exhibit 10 contract to a two-way contract in October and as Morris’ backup, Goodwin has already made a case as to why he should replace Morris as the starter.
That should be enough of an explanation as to why Washington needs to be closely monitoring the Knicks’ situation with Quickley. Without a doubt, he’d get more minutes in the nation’s capital than he has in New York. The Wizards had John Wall as a point guard for nine seasons, but since 2019, Washington’s still been searching for a long-term replacement. Quickley could be that guy.

<h3>2: Dallas Mavericks</h3>
<p>The Mavericks are known for going after former Knicks players, so why wouldn’t Mark Cuban be interested in Immanuel Quickley? Not to mention, Dallas <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/11/19/3-trade-destinations-immanuel-quickley-hurt-knicks-fans/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/09/29/dorian-finney-smith-best-response-jalen-brunson-signing-knicks/">let Jalen Brunson go</a> for nothing over the offseason, and IQ would give the Mavericks valuable depth at guard. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Mavericks are one of the teams that have reached out to the Knicks about the guard.</p>
<p>Luka Doncic’s backup is 31-year-old Facundo Campazzo, who is averaging 1.5 points in four games. He isn’t a suitable playmaker option for a Dallas team that needs just that, but Quickley would be. IQ’s defense would be a bonus for an already strong defensive team.</p>
<p>Quickley isn’t the second star that the Mavericks are after to pair with Luka, but trading for IQ would help to take some of the pressure off Doncic’s shoulders. Quickley’s been in a shooting slump to start the year for the Knicks, which is what happened in 2021-22. If he can become a consistent shooter, IQ could be a key piece in Dallas for years to come.</p>

<h3>1: Minnesota Timberwolves</h3>
<p>After giving up five first-round picks to Danny Ainge and the Jazz in exchange for Rudy Gobert, the Timberwolves have started off the season not looking like a contender in the West. Minnesota’s off to a 7-8 start, and that includes <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/11/19/3-trade-destinations-immanuel-quickley-hurt-knicks-fans/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/11/08/knicks-dominance-timberwolves-sparks-strong-criticism-anthony-edwards/">a blowout loss</a> to New York.</p>
<p>The Timberwolves starting point guard D’Angelo Russell is in the final year of a four-year deal that he signed with the Nets. In the summer, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent. Reportedly, there weren’t discussions between the two sides <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/11/19/3-trade-destinations-immanuel-quickley-hurt-knicks-fans/"https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10052628-windhorst-on-dangelo-russell-contract-extension-i-have-not-heard-any-discussion#:~:text=Russell%20is%20heading%20into%20the,cut%20with%20his%20next%20contract." target="_blank" rel="noopener">about an extension</a> before the October deadline, which likely had something to do with the drop off in Russell’s performance over the past two seasons.</p>
<p>With Russell’s future in Minnesota unclear and backup point guard Jordan McLaughlin not being much to write home about, the Timberwolves could very well be one of the teams that have reached out to the Knicks about Immanuel Quickley.</p>
<p>Quickley’s struggled on the offensive end in the first month of the season, but his positive impact on the defensive end is something that Russell hasn’t been able to achieve in Minnesota. With the front office pondering Russell’s future, trading for IQ is something that should’ve already crossed Tim Connelly’s mind.</p>
