Who will the Knicks hire to replace Scott Perry as general manager?

On the same day that Bob Myers announced that he’d be stepping down from his role as president and general manager for the Warriors, Newsday’s Steve Popper reported that the New York Knicks aren’t going to extend general manager Scott Perry’s contract this summer.

The news led to even more Knicks fans speculating whether or not the organization would hire Myers to replace Perry. While that’s a reasonable thought given the timing, there’s little reason to believe that Myers would even want to go to New York to be general manager. The two-time executive of the year could take some time off before making his next move. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Myers is still unsure about what his future will look like.

So, who will the Knicks hire to replace Perry? Gersson Rosas appears to be a popular candidate to replace Perry. New York hired him as a senior advisor ahead of the 2022 trade deadline after he was let go by the Timberwolves, where he served as president. Rosas reportedly was the main negotiator in the trade talks for Donovan Mitchell last summer. The 44-year-old spent 10 years in Houston’s front office before being named GM of Dallas in 2013, but he was with the Mavericks for only three months before returning to the Rockets.

If Rosas remains in his current role, the Knicks could look to another internal candidate or open up an external search for someone to take over Perry’s role.

New York Knicks GM Scott Perry’s contract set to expire this summer

Scott Perry was hired by former president Steve Mills in 2017 and then had his contract extended shortly after Leon Rose took over in 2020. Perry helped to turn around a struggling franchise and will walk away leaving it better than he found it. After his success in New York, Perry will likely wind up as a GM elsewhere.

It’s a bit puzzling why Perry’s contract wasn’t extended after the Knicks made it to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the first time in 10 years. SNY’s Ian Begley reported that he isn’t sure whether or not Perry and New York had discussions about an extension but that Perry is “currently exploring other options.” He’ll be a good pickup wherever he ends up.

In an offseason where the Knicks are expected to aggressively pursue a star, the organization will also name a new GM, too. Will it be Gersson Rosas?
