8. Mark Jackson
Mark Jackson started his career off with the Knicks. He was the 18th overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft. As a Knick, Jackson won Rookie of the Year and became the lowest draft pick to win the award since the 1950s.
Two years later, he was named an All-Star. Being the point guard, Mark Jackson, along with Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley, led the Knicks into fierce playoff battles with the Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons.
Now, Jackson is an analyst and broadcaster for ESPN. It would be awesome if MSG Network gave Jackson a deal, as I think that he and Clyde Frazier would be great during games.
7. Latrell Sprewell
One of the most infamous Knickerbockers is Latrell Sprewell! He was known for many of his off-the-court antics, but Sprewell gave New York something to cheer for.
After helping lead the team to the Finals in 1999, he helped the team win 50 games in 1999-2000 en route to a second straight Eastern Conference Finals appearance. The following year, he was an All-Star. He is still with the Knicks, as you may see him courtside at some games. He specializes in media relations with the franchise and MSG Network.
6. Charlie Ward
The only Heisman Trophy winner to play in the NBA was a New York Knick. Yes! Charlie Ward is ours and we love him to this day! The Knicks drafted Ward in 1994 and he became the premier point guard.
Ward was known to be a great leader on the floor, helping the Knicks reach the NBA Finals in 1999. Today, you can find Ward back in Florida. Ward is coaching boys high school basketball at his alma mater, Florida State University School. The team has improved since his arrival, and he even won the All-Big Bend Coach of the Year award in 2021 and 2022.
New York Knicks was during the 1990s. Although they didn’t win a ring, they were always in the conversation. Knicks fans will always remember the players that wore the blue, white, and orange colors. They showed up to work, played hard, and gave us something to get excited about!

All of the players did their jobs well, and some have even furthered their basketball careers. It’s hard to let go of something you know or have done for so long. For some of these players, basketball is still a way of life. Let’s take a look at some of the golden era Knicks that haven’t been able to step away from the game.

14 former Knicks from the 90s that love the game too much to stay away

14. Monty Williams

Monty Williams played for the Knicks from 1994-1996. He bounced around during his career but found his knack for coaching. Williams started as an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers and then made his way to the New Orleans Hornets, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Philadelphia 76ers. Now, he has found a home with the Phoenix Suns, and he led them to the NBA Finals in 2021.

13. Doc Rivers

Doc Rivers <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/08/19/14-former-knicks-90s-game/3/"https://dailyknicks.com/2020/09/29/ny-knicks-remembering-doc-rivers-short-tenure/#:~:text=Unfortunately%2C%20the%201992%2D93%20season,Anthony%20on%20the%20depth%20chart.">had a short stint in New York in the 90s. In the 1993 playoffs, he played and started in all 15 games before the Knicks fell to the Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals. Now, Doc is on the sideline as a head coach for the 76ers.

12. Derek Harper

Just like Doc Rivers, Derek Harper played a few years for the Knicks as well. In fact, he was traded to replace an injured Doc in the 1993-94 season. One of Harper’s best times with the Knicks came in the 1995 playoffs, where he shot over 50% from the field and 57% from three-point range.

Now a local analyst for Dallas Mavericks games, his jersey was retired by the Mavericks franchise when Dallas played New York in 2018.

11. Hubert Davis

A year after picking up Greg Anthony, in 1992, <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/08/19/14-former-knicks-90s-game/3/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/08/06/5-knicks-role-players-never-forgotten-services/5/">the Knickerbockers drafted Hubert Davis. Known as a sharpshooter in the Garden, Davis still holds the highest single-season three-point percentage in Knicks history. In the 1995-96 season, Davis came off the bench and shot the three-ball at 47%!

He was even better in the playoffs that season, increasing his percentage to 52%. One of his most famous moments as a Knick came in Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Semifinals. After a questionable foul was called against Scottie Pippen, Davis went to the line and made two free throws to win the game. New York went on to win that series in seven games.

Currently, Davis is enjoying a budding career at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This past season, Davis led the Tar Heels to the national championship in his first season as head coach, and they are favored to win it all this upcoming season.

10. Greg Anthony

In 1991, New York selected Greg Anthony from UNLV with the No. 12 overall pick. He was known for his tough defense under the coaching of Pat Riley. Anthony fit in well with the identity of the Knicks, as in the 90s they were known to not give up any layups. He was one of the key pieces to the team’s NBA Finals run in 1994.

Just like fellow point guard Mark Jackson, Anthony is now an analyst as well as a co-host. He is a college basketball analyst and hosts a show on SiriusXM NBA radio. You may know his son too, Orlando Magic point guard Cole Anthony.

9. Pat Riley

<a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/08/19/14-former-knicks-90s-game/3/"https://dailyknicks.com/2020/05/23/knicks-michael-jordan-pat-riley-the-last-dance/">Pat Riley coached the Knicks in the early 90s before Jeff Van Gundy arrived. Riley has been President of the Miami Heat for decades, winning a few championships in the meantime. Maybe New York should have kept him!

5. Jeff Van Gundy

Jeff Van Gundy remains one of the best coaches that the franchise has had. He was the reason why the Knicks were competitive in the 90s. Taking the place of Pat Riley, Van Gundy maintained New York’s tough and defensive identity.

With Van Gundy, the Knicks were destined to reach the Eastern Conference Finals or NBA Finals. Nowadays, you can see Jeff Van Gundy calling games alongside Mark Jackson and Mike Breen on ESPN. It’s decades later, and Van Gundy still manages to punch his ticket to the NBA Finals.

4. Allan Houston

Simply a New York Knick great, Allan Houston was loved by many. A sharpshooter that could hit from deep and the mid-range, Houston’s health prohibited him from having a prosperous career.

He made the All-Star team twice in 2000 and 2001 after helping lead the Knicks to the Finals in 1999. In 1999, he helped New York pull off an unbelievable feat as the team beat the Miami Heat in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs. His <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/08/19/14-former-knicks-90s-game/3/"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORmD_ahH2zE%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">buzzer-beater with 0.8 seconds left lifted the eighth-seeded Knicks over the first-place Heat, which was only the second time that has happened in history!

Allan Houston has remained a Knick in 2022 but in the front office. He is now the special assistant to the general manager, and he even served as general manager of the G-League Westchester Knicks.

3. Tom Thibodeau

Did you know that Tom Thibodeau was an assistant coach for the Knicks in the 90s? He was there from 1996-2003. So, he is familiar with the winning culture that the Knicks once had. Fast forward over 20 years later, and he is back in New York, but this time at the helm.
2. John Starks

A fan favorite for the Knickerbockers, John Starks’ name will always be mentioned in New York. The eight years he gave us sure were special. Right before our eyes, we watched Starks grow into an All-Star and a defensive specialist. He also provided a spark off the bench in 1996-97, winning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award.

Starks has countless highlights and many moments in the Big Apple. I still wish he would’ve won that slam dunk contest in 1992!

Today, John Starks is involved with the game in a different way. He is a part of Ektio shoes. Ektio shoes uses technology to help players with their balance and stability. Starks has teamed up with the brand to promote the technology and create awareness. He has had past issues with foot injuries and believes that these shoes can prevent what he went through.

1. Patrick Ewing

Arguably the greatest Knick ever, Patrick Ewing has stayed close to the hardwood. Playing <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/08/19/14-former-knicks-90s-game/3/"https://dailyknicks.com/2020/05/28/new-york-knicks-patrick-ewing-reveals-best-teammates/">for the Knicks from 1985-2000, Ewing racked up 11 All-Star selections, seven All-NBA selections, three NBA All-Defense selections, a Rookie of the Year award, and two NBA Finals appearances.

Now, the 50th and 75th NBA anniversary teammate is the head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball program. In 2021, he led them to the Big East Conference Tournament Championship as the last seed, securing their first NCAA bid in seven years. Ewing won in college, in the NBA, and now as a coach. He is truly a winner!
