If the New York Knicks are looking for more of a scoring option in the 2023 NBA Draft, there is one experienced prospect that would make a lot of sense for a team that may be looking for a more NBA-ready contributor. Iowa’s Kris Murray has the look of a player that could come in and embrace a scoring role for a team off the bench.
Murray may not be the prospect that his young brother, Keegan, was but he’s developed into a really good prospect in his own right. During his junior season, Murray is coming off a season in which he averaged 20 points and eight rebounds on 48% shooting from the field and 34% shooting from three-point range. At 6-foot-8, he’s a player that could play the small forward or power forward position at the next level and could offer some versatility in an ever-changing NBA.
Murray may not have the high ceiling that some of the other prospects on this list have but he’s certainly a player that comes in with a more developed offensive game. And if that’s something New York would be looking for, Murray may be their prospect.
they own the Dallas Mavericks’ first-round pick.

Assuming the pick doesn’t move in any direction substantially, let’s rank the top 10 realistic prospects that could be available for the Knicks to select in this year’s NBA Draft.

Honorable mentions

Julian Strawther, G, Gonzaga

There is a lot to like about Julian Strawther as a potential prospect that the Knicks could target in the middle of the NBA Draft. He seems like a player that has an efficient enough offensive skill set where he could make an impact while also being a capable defender who wouldn’t get played off the court schematically.

The big question about Strawther as a prospect is whether enough his ceiling is high enough to warrant him being a first-round pick.

Trayce Jackson-Davis, F, Indiana

Over the next few weeks leading toward the pre-draft process, there’s a chance that Trayce Jackson-Davis ends up being a player that rises up big boards. He’s an older (and more experienced) prospect and is already 23 years old, playing all four years at Indiana. However, he’s proven this season that he deserves a shot at the next level. And I’d have to imagine that his stat line of 21-11-4 on 58% shooting from the floor will give him that opportunity.

If there is one concern about TJD it is his lack of three-point shooting ability. Through his four years at Indiana, he took a grand total of three threes and missed them all.

10. Noah Clowney, F, Alabama

Noah Clowney has been somewhat overlooked as an NBA Draft prospect because Brandon Miller has garnered most if not all the headlines for the Alabama basketball program. And probably rightfully so. Miller has the potential to be a superstar at the next level. While I don’t believe many think Clowney can be that level of a prospect, he could be a really good contributor for a team in the right situation.

And if the Knicks are looking for another athletic big that they can throw into their developmental system, Clowney may be a fit in the middle of the first round. At 6-foot-10 with his athleticism, Clowney could emerge as a versatile defender that the Knicks could use in the frontcourt. He averaged 10 points and eight rebounds on 49% shooting from the field during the regular season for the Crimson Tide. He also proved he can extend his range to the three-point line (29% on three attempts per game).

The Knicks may be a little cluttered at the power forward and center positions but if they decided to <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/03/23/nba-mock-draft-ranking-top-10-realistic-picks-new-york-knicks/3/"https://dailyknicks.com/2023/03/18/3-teams-new-york-knicks-could-trade-obi-toppin-to/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">move on from one of their core contributors at these positions, perhaps Clowney would make some sense in the draft.

8. Maxwell Lewis, G, Pepperdine

Heading into the 2023 NBA Draft, there’s a case to be made that Maxwell Lewis is one of the “safest” prospects to select outside the lottery. The sophomore wing has proven that he has the potential to be a 3-and-D contributor right away. During his second season at Pepperdine, in which he started every game, he averaged 17 points, six rebounds, and three assists on 47% shooting from the field and 35% shooting from three-point range (on four attempts per game).

That said, there are certainly some questions about Lewis as a long-term prospect. He struggles to create his own offense and that could emerge as a problem for his viability in the long run at the NBA level. He could absolutely play a defined role due to his capabilities on the defensive end and his outside shooting but because of the questions revolving around the other parts of his game, he’s considered to have somewhat of a low ceiling.

That’s probably the biggest reason why he won’t be drafted higher and it could lead him to fall out of the first round entirely. Either way, he should be a player that the Knicks consider with their first-round pick.

Jordan Hawkins is a player that has developed into a legit first-round worthy prospect with the improvement he’s made from his freshman to sophomore season. As one of the best three-point shooters in college basketball, Hawkins is a player that can easily envision playing a defined role for a team such as the Knicks. New York needs to address its lackluster three-point shooting during the offseason and drafting a prospect such as Hawkins could be part of the solution.

In what ended up being a breakout season, Hawkins averaged 16 points and four rebounds on 37% shooting from three-point range (on nearly eight attempts per contest). Because of his size and length, you would imagine that he could grow into a capable defender at the next level but that’s far from a certainty right now with Hawkins.

With Hawkins, you have to like the development that he underwent from his freshman to sophomore year. At the same time, there are true questions about his long-term potential at the next level. I’m not sure his shooting will ultimately outweigh those questions. It’s something that the Knicks, or any team interested in Hawkins, will have to answer.

5. Brice Sensabaugh, G, Ohio State

Heading into the start of the college basketball season, I’m not sure there were many scouts that were projecting Brice Sensabaugh to be a high draft pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. In fact, coming out of high school, he was just the <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/03/23/nba-mock-draft-ranking-top-10-realistic-picks-new-york-knicks/3/"https://www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/playerrankings/_/class/2022" target="_blank" rel="noopener">45th-ranked high school player by ESPN. Nevertheless, he’s coming off a potentially life-changing freshman season at Ohio State. Now, there’s a chance he could be taken just outside the lottery in this year’s NBA Draft.

Sensabaugh is coming off a season in which he led the Buckeyes in scoring with 16 points per game. He added five rebounds per contest and was extremely efficient, hitting at a 48% clip overall and a 41% clip from three-point range. The next couple of months will be interesting for Sensabaugh. Despite the fact that he somewhat outperformed his pre-season expectations, I believe he still has some work to do during his pre-draft process.

But if the Knicks are looking for a potential offensive sparkplug off the bench, Sensabaugh may be a great selection at this point in the NBA Draft. And with the way that he blossomed during his freshman season, there’s a case to be made that he clearly still has some untapped potential.

4. G.G. Jackson, F, South Carolina

At least in my opinion, Gregory (or G.G.) Jackson is one of the most intriguing prospects in this year’s NBA Draft. Some NBA scouts have identified Jackson as somewhat of a positional tweener, but he has an intriguing skill set that could make him a more popular prospect as we inch closer to the NBA Draft. Jackson is known as the youngest player in this draft class and one that is still just scratching the surface of the player that he can be – whether that ends up working in his favor or not remains to be seen.

The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 15 points and six rebounds on 38% shooting from the field. He also has a capable three-point shot in his arsenal – shooting at a 32% clip this season. He’s still an extremely raw prospect but has shown the potential to be a worthy roll of the dice in the first round.

There are questions as to whether he’ll play the 3 or 4 at the next level but when it comes to his athleticism and potential down the road, I believe that a team like the Knicks should be willing to take on the risk.

<a class="next-slide-btn" style="background: #007BC1" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/03/23/nba-mock-draft-ranking-top-10-realistic-picks-new-york-knicks/3/"#"> Next: No. 3 - A Mystery Wing

3. Rayan Rupert, F, France

Heading into the 2023 NBA Draft, Rayan Rupert remains <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2023/03/23/nba-mock-draft-ranking-top-10-realistic-picks-new-york-knicks/3/"https://www.si.com/nba/draft/prospect-profiles/nba-draft-scouting-report-nbls-rayan-rupert" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one of the bigger mysteries. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This is where a team like the Knicks could take advantage. And they’ve had success in the past with some international prospects. Perhaps Rupert could be the next international draft pick that they hit on. At 6-foot-6 with a 7-foot-plus wingspan, Rupert is a prospect that we may not even know what his ceiling is.

If there’s one positive when it comes to Rupert, it’s the fact that many believe he can be somewhat of a difference-maker on the defensive end initially. And that’s a trait that you have to love in rookies. However, if he’s truly going to make a splash in the league, he’s going to have to make some strides on the offensive end of the floor. And that’s where the biggest question marks are surrounding his game.

There are natural questions when it comes to Rupert and most of them won’t be answered until he comes over for some individual workouts, but there’s a real chance that Rupert could end up being selected in the middle of the first round.

2. Jett Howard, F, Michigan

Jett Howard has one of the smoothest skill sets when it comes to prospects that are unlikely to be selected in the lottery. Plus, he comes with an NBA pedigree that a lot of teams around the league will like from a prospect. Jett is the son of former NBA player Juwan Howard. The 6-foot-8 freshman forward had quite the season at Michigan, even while battling an injury that limited him toward the end of the year. And that’s probably the biggest reason why the Wolverines ended up missing the NCAA Tournament.

Nevertheless, Howard finished with a respectable state line – averaging 14 points and three rebounds on 37% shooting from three-point range (on seven attempts per game). But what you have to like about Howard is that he has the potential to be an even better pro than a college player. He’s still growing and developing as a player and there’s a belief that he wasn’t able to show all his skill set during his lone season at Michigan.

If that does end up being the case, he could be one of the steals of the first round. The concerns for Howard surround his defensive capabilities. However, in the right system, you have to believe that he’d be able to grow as a player on that end of the floor. For a team like the Knicks, Howard could be a player that grows (and add some depth) behind RJ Barrett.

1. Jalen Hood-Schifino, G, Indiana

Jalen Hood-Schifino, in an ideal scenario, is a prospect that would make a lot of sense down the line next to Jalen Brunson. He’s a big guard (at 6-foot-6) that could thrive as a playmaker in the right system. JHS is coming off a freshman season in which he averaged 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists on 42% shooting from the field and 34% shooting from three-point range. His great size could also lead to a path where he becomes a difference-making defender in the NBA.

If he was a more consistent shooter, he is probably in consideration to be a lottery pick. If the Knicks believe that they can bring him along with his shot-taking decision-making, he’s certainly a player that could pay dividends for the team down the line.

I would be extremely surprised if JHS wasn’t relatively high on New York’s initial NBA Draft big board, especially if they’re looking to add a versatile guard at some point during the offseason.

There are many different avenues and prospects (attached to those avenues) that the Knicks can pursue in the 2023 NBA Draft. And there’s a good chance that many, if not all, of the prospects listed will be in consideration at some point before the draft.
