There is reportedly a deal in place for the Trail Blazers to send the No. 7 overall pick to the Pistons for Jerami Grant, and while that makes sense for Portland, the Knicks could put together a package centered around Julius Randle that could be more enticing for the team looking to help Damian Lillard win.
Given the struggles that Randle had in 2021-22, it’s unlikely that the Trail Blazers would take a straight swap here, but throwing in another veteran like Alec Burks, as well as some more picks for the future, could help convince Portland that Randle is Lillard’s missing piece.
The report that the Grant deal is already in place doesn’t help New York, as it means the front office will need to blow the Trail Blazers away with an offer to get them to take on Randle, but given how much the Knicks need Obi Toppin to step into the starting role, it’s something they genuinely need to explore.
At No. 7 overall, New York would be out of the running for Jaden Ivey or Shaedon Sharpe, two of the most sought after and best-fitting prospects for the Knicks. But it would allow them to choose between the likes of AJ Griffin, Johnny Davis, or Bennedict Mathurin, who could all be game-changers in New York’s 2022-23 lineup.
New York Knicks</a> recently landed the 11th overall draft pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, and while there are plenty of solid candidates to be drafted at that spot, the Knicks really need a difference-maker to join this young, talented lineup.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the draft gods weren’t on New York’s side, as the team <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/06/18/3-teams-knicks-make-trade-2022-nba-draft/2/"https://nypost.com/2022/05/17/nba-draft-lottery-knicks-stay-put-at-no-11/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wasn’t able to move up</a> into the top four to get a chance at Chet Holmgren, Jabari Smith Jr., or Paolo Banchero. Fortunately, the Knicks are blessed with a few moveable pieces and plenty of draft capital. On draft night, no one should be surprised if Leon Rose uses these assets to move up from where the team currently sits.</p>
<p>It’s become clear at this point that New York truly needs to build around its young core led by RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin, and a host of other talented young players. Potentially moving away from Julius Randle to add another young piece to this core would be the right move to make.</p>
<p>While it’s unlikely that the Knicks will be able to move all the way up into the top three, there are teams ahead of them looking to make some serious moves, so who are they? And how possible is it that New York can make a deal on draft night?</p>

the stars may be aligning for New York</a>.</p>
<p>Pairing Ivey with the trio of Barrett, Toppin, and Quickley would give the Knicks athleticism, explosiveness, and confidence in the starting lineup. While it would cost a lot more than moving up to No. 7 with Portland, it’s something that New York needs to look into.</p>
<p>No one is sure whether or not <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/06/18/3-teams-knicks-make-trade-2022-nba-draft/2/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/05/21/knicks-use-julius-randle-trade-no-4-2022-nba-draft/">Sacramento would enjoy the fit of Randle on its squad</a>, but pairing Randle with Burks, the No. 11 pick, and multiple future picks would make sense for both sides, especially the Knicks.</p>
<p>Pairing Randle with Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox, Davion Mitchell, and Harrison Barnes, as well as the No. 11 overall pick, would make the Kings an intriguing team in the West, so this is perhaps a trade that could work out best for both squads. While some salary fillers might need to be thrown in, this is one to keep a <em>serious</em> eye on come draft night.</p>
