There’s been reason to believe that the front office is headed in the right direction for an exciting summer, but that doesn’t mean that a few things won’t be botched along the way.
Let’s hope that isn’t the case. Although even the play-in tournament became out of the question for New York, the year ended on a high note behind the play of Obi Toppin and Immanuel Quickley.
Both players didn’t get the playing time that they deserved for the majority of the season, and when they finally did, it left Knicks fans yearning for more. It was almost as if the year ended on a cliffhanger (in a good way).
With those memories still fresh on our minds, the fact that the 2022-23 season is nearly half a year away is unfortunate. However, what would be even more unfortunate would be if New York’s front office made one of the following moves during the offseason.
RJ Barrett is the player that the Knicks should build their future around, so while signing him to an extension would be celebrated by fans, it wouldn’t be the absolute worst thing in the world if a deal wasn’t completed this summer.
The 21-year-old is a lock to play for New York through next year and if the two sides don’t agree to an extension, he’ll become a restricted free agent next offseason. The Knicks would be able to match any offer that comes Barrett’s way, but it doesn’t (and shouldn’t) have to come down to that.
Now that he’s officially available to sign a new deal since the offseason is underway, a possible extension would max out at five years, $181 million.
Some fans are hesitant to give him that much, especially after seeing how Julius Randle played after signing an extension, but some fans want a maximum extension deal to be completed as soon as possible.

With those memories still fresh on our minds, the fact that the 2022-23 season is nearly half a year away is unfortunate. However, what would be even more unfortunate would be if New York’s front office made one of the following moves during the offseason.

4: Not signing RJ Barrett to an extension

RJ Barrett is the player that the Knicks should build their future around, so while signing him to an extension would be celebrated by fans, it wouldn’t be the absolute worst thing in the world if a deal wasn’t completed this summer.

The 21-year-old is a lock to play for New York through next year and if the two sides don’t agree to an extension, he’ll become a restricted free agent next offseason. The Knicks would be able to match any offer that comes Barrett’s way, but it doesn’t (and shouldn’t) have to come down to that.

Will RJ Barrett sign a maximum rookie extension with the New York Knicks?

Now that he’s officially available to sign a new deal since the offseason is underway, a possible extension would <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/23/4-offseason-nightmare-scenarios-knicks-fans-want-front-office-avoid/"https://nypost.com/2022/03/23/why-knicks-giving-rj-barrett-a-max-extension-shouldnt-be-a-lock/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">max out at five years, $181 million.

Some fans are hesitant to give him that much, especially after seeing how Julius Randle played after signing an extension, but some fans want a maximum extension deal to be completed as soon as possible.

Barrett’s <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/23/4-offseason-nightmare-scenarios-knicks-fans-want-front-office-avoid/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/09/rj-barrett-comments-prove-meant-new-york-knicks-life/">made it clear that he wants to be in New York and given the growth that he made during 2022 alone, there’s no reason why a deal shouldn’t be made between the two sides this summer.

The front office doesn’t need to let a talent like Barrett slip through the franchise’s fingers. He’s THE player that the roster needs to be constructed around and <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/23/4-offseason-nightmare-scenarios-knicks-fans-want-front-office-avoid/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/03/30/new-york-knicks-rj-barrett-deserve-maximum-rookie-extension/">there should be no room for doubt in terms of his future status.

New York locked in the 11th-best lottery odds for the 2022 NBA Draft on June 23 in Brooklyn.

The Knicks have a 2% chance to make it into the top-10 for a lottery pick. Washington, who New York beat on the second to last game of the 2021-22 regular season, holds the 10th-best lottery odds.

As it stands right now, the Knicks are too far out of range to select fan-favorite and potential No. 1 pick of the draft Jaden Ivey. In his sophomore season at Purdue, the All-American averaged 17.3 points, 4.9 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in 36 games. He shot 46% from the field and 35.8% from the 3-point line.

The top draft spot could go to either Ivey or Duke’s Paolo Banchero, but New York could use a player like Ivey over Banchero. The Knicks have had a dire point guard need for two decades now and Ivey would address that issue. However, the probability of him still being on the board when New York makes its pick is somewhere around .00001%.

What are the New York Knicks going to do in the 2022 NBA Draft?

Other names outside of Ivey’s that are projected to be lottery picks (or right outside of it) would also benefit the Knicks.

Leon Rose has proven to be a solid drafter thus far (hello, Toppin), so fans can trust him to make the right choice, and while Barrett and Toppin were both lottery picks, New York hasn’t always had the best luck in the past. Remember Frank Ntilikina in 2017? Let’s not discuss that any further.

Although the Knicks’ current projected pick isn’t an elusive top-10 selection, it could also be used as part of a trade to land a star in New York. Fans have their differences in opinion on that, but that doesn’t seem to be the likely route.

Rose and company would have to get a lot wrong in June to upset fans, but the option can’t be counted out until the draft comes and goes. A successful selection will help to boost the Knicks’ young core even more.
