Bringing in an emerging and already-proven young point guard in Jalen Brunson certainly takes away a large chunk of point guard minutes. It seems as though the “safe” assumption to make is that the Knicks’ starting lineup on opening night will be: Brunson-Fournier-Barrett-Randle-Robinson. That’s the same lineup as last season, but with Brunson at point guard instead of a mishmash of non-PGs.
Even if RJ Barrett continues to grow as a defender, he’s at his strongest guarding wings. He struggles keeping up with shiftier players. The Knicks’ other perimeter defender in the starting lineup? Six-foot-one Jalen Brunson. No matter how you slice it, that starting lineup can get diced up by all of the star guards in the Eastern Conference.
This can be a pro-Quickley argument or even a pro-Quentin Grimes argument: Injecting some actual defense, athleticism, and speed into the starting SG position. Grimes and Quickley have also shown to be great shooters as well, so you wonder just how much of a hit the Knicks would take, if at all, in their long-range shooting.
Even if Immanuel Quickley doesn’t take the starting job, the team can adjust Fournier to becoming more of a 20-25 minutes per game player than some sort of surefire 30+ minute per game starter. And for Quickley and his strongest supporters, it’s not just about what we’ve seen already, it’s about how much more potential there could still be.
third-year guard Immanuel Quickley propelled into a larger role. A recent report from <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/09/22/knicks-immanuel-quickley-path-larger-role/2/"https://www.sny.tv/articles/knicks-what-we-know-rotation-decisions-2022-23-season" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SNY’s Ian Begley stated that there is some momentum within the organization for Quickley to gain a larger role with the team. The article stated:

“…there is an expectation that Immanuel Quickley will get an increased role early on in 2022-23, per people familiar with the matter. Quickley averaged 27.5 minutes per game after the All-Star break. He had several strong outings as a playmaker in that time frame and several solid shooting stretches.”

There has been a ton of back and forth between Knicks fans and the front office on the distribution of playing time on the roster. Between head coach Tom Thibodeau and the numerous different voices within the front office, there has been plenty of division on who deserves playing time and which lineups are optimal for winning — How do we blend “winning culture” with development?

Immanuel Quickley is a big X-factor for the Knicks next season

As some of these Knicks players enter their second, third, and even fourth years in the league, maybe it’s time to throw them into the fire. After all, we saw some impressive stretches from players like <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/09/22/knicks-immanuel-quickley-path-larger-role/2/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/11/obi-toppin-immanuel-quickley-emerge-new-york-knicks-dominant-duo-unfair-time/">Quickley and Obi Toppin when they got significant run at the end of the season.

When it comes to Quickley in particular, his perimeter defense, shooting, and secondary playmaking could all be amplified if given a larger role. The question is, how would he get increased minutes in this muddy rotation?

How will the Knicks get Immanuel Quickley more involved?

Bringing in an emerging and already-proven young point guard in Jalen Brunson certainly takes away a large chunk of point guard minutes. It seems as though the “safe” assumption to make is that the Knicks’ starting lineup on opening night will be: Brunson-Fournier-Barrett-Randle-Robinson. That’s the same lineup as last season, but with Brunson at point guard instead of a mishmash of non-PGs.

As far as the <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/09/22/knicks-immanuel-quickley-path-larger-role/2/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/07/06/jalen-brunson-free-agency-signing-necessitates-knicks-starting-quentin-grimes/">starting shooting guard job, Evan Fournier will likely be penciled in on opening night, but it doesn’t mean that the job is safe. Everyone should know what the Knicks have in Evan Fournier right now. He’s a <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/09/22/knicks-immanuel-quickley-path-larger-role/2/"https://nypost.com/2022/03/23/evan-fournier-sets-knicks-single-season-3-point-record/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lights-out shooter and a microwave sniper that can go nuclear when he gets hot. He is also a slow, molasses-like defender who doesn’t have many other “plus” attributes. Fournier’s lack of side-to-side quickness at the shooting guard position doesn’t favor New York’s perimeter defense.

Even if RJ Barrett continues to grow as a defender, he’s at his strongest guarding wings. He struggles keeping up with shiftier players. The Knicks’ other perimeter defender in the starting lineup? Six-foot-one Jalen Brunson. their younger players playing heavier minutes?

After a major drop-off in the win column last season, changes in the rotation hierarchy are certainly on the table. Bringing in a point guard like Brunson is a major move. The Knicks have pieces for two to three years down the line, but the problem is that a lot of these pieces still haven’t gotten a true sustained chance to <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/09/22/knicks-immanuel-quickley-path-larger-role/2/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/04/20/knicks-allow-immanuel-quickley-follow-tyrese-maxey-footsteps/">showcase their potential.

If you want to talk about rookies having to earn their spot in a rotation and learn from the bench, that’s totally fair. That was a reasonable conversation during a lot of the Knicks players’ rookie years.

For Quickley, it’s year three in the league. There are only so many times a player like Quickley can “flash” on a team like the Knicks, who are far from having a roster that should prevent him from seeing a large role.

You don’t even have to be a Immanuel Quickley “stan” to at the very least, acknowledge that he has <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/09/22/knicks-immanuel-quickley-path-larger-role/2/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/09/13/knicks-immanuel-quickley-2022-23-season-chance/">plenty of potential. He has the ability to make an impact now, but it’s the possibility of him growing into a high-end starter that needs to be put into action by the Knicks.

Even in the worst-case scenario that Quickley is some sort of average tweener guard, what are the Knicks sacrificing to make that discovery? They demote Fournier to a bench-scoring role? Does that somehow alter the course of the franchise? The writing is on the wall for Quickley to get his chance this season and help the team win now and in the future.
