With Adrian Wojnarowski reporting that the Utah Jazz have ‘shown a willingness’ to listen to trade offers for Donovan Mitchell, New York Knicks fans have been on edge, whether it be because they do or don’t want the three-time All-Star.
This is what Minnesota gave up in the Rudy Gobert trade: Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Leandro Bolmaro, Walker Kessler, Jarred Vanderbilt, a 2023 first-round pick, a 2025 first-round pick, a 2026 pick swap, a 2027 first-round pick, and a 2029 first-round pick. Danny Ainge is going to make sure that Utah gets something similar in return for Mitchell if he is traded.
New York has a promising young roster, so while the Jazz are more focused on stockpiling picks, the Knicks are going to have to give up a few players in return. And here’s a question that we posed on Twitter yesterday:
After looking at the responses that were given, we’re going to rank seven of New York’s players based on the views of fans. And you know exactly who’s going to fall in at No. 7.
Should Ainge inquire about RJ Barrett? Absolutely. Should Leon Rose be willing to deal Barrett to Utah? Absolutely not.
It’d set New York back to include Barrett in a Mitchell trade package. Not to mention that it’d be a travesty to fans to not get to see Barrett and Mitchell on the court together.
Based on Begley’s report, along with common knowledge, Barrett appears to be untouchable. If a trade for Mitchell goes through, his name shouldn’t be included.

The Athletic’s Tony Jones, who covers the Jazz, wrote that <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/07/13/ranking-7-knicks-players-trade-donovan-mitchell/"https://twitter.com/Tjonesonthenba/status/1546975643300028416" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to league sources, New York’s expected to “quickly try and put together a package.” The bottom line is that the Knicks have the assets, including eight tradable first-round picks.

the Knicks’ starting shooting guard next season. If he isn’t traded to the Jazz, that is.

In the three summer league games that New York’s played in, he’s performed well. And yes, it’s just summer league, but Grimes has dominated on both ends of the floor. As a rookie, he played in 46 games for the Knicks and there’s no reason to believe that his role isn’t going to increase in 2022-23.

And in the replies on Twitter, many users didn’t mention Grimes. His success in Las Vegas likely played a role in that. At the age of 22, he still has a long future in the league ahead of him. As a 3-and-D wing, Grimes holds a lot of value, which is something that Utah’s well aware of.

But let’s be realistic, if Mitchell comes to New York, he’s going to be the starting shooting guard, which would obviously impact Grimes’ playing time. And Grimes has what it takes to be an NBA starter, but with Mitchell being far more established, Knicks fans are going to have to make a sacrifice. If only Mitchell could play defense like Grimes.

Now that New York <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/07/13/ranking-7-knicks-players-trade-donovan-mitchell/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/07/13/knicks-make-jalen-brunson-free-agency-signing-official/">has its new point guard in Jalen Brunson, Quickley could be viewed as expendable. He’d continue to be a spark off the bench for the Knicks in 2022-23, but if Mitchell’s going to be on the team, New York will have less of a need for Quickley.

He recently turned 23 and like Obi, he finished strong this past season. And if IQ would’ve been given more playing time over Alec Burks (which is what should’ve happened), perhaps fans would be even more attached to him.

Look at the success that Tyrese Maxey’s had in Philadelphia. Quickley could be on a similar path if he would’ve been granted more time on the court.

The IQ-Obi duo is a whole lot of fun, so if one of them goes and the other was to stay, it’d be sad to have them split up. But GMs don’t make deals based on the feelings of fans.

4: Obi Toppin

If a trade happens, there’s at least an 80% chance that Obi Toppin’s going to be headed to Utah. He’s spent his first two years playing in the league behind Julius Randle, which includes Randle’s All-Star and MIP season.

It’d be a disgrace to Toppin and Knicks fans for the No. 8 pick in the 2020 draft to ride the bench for another year. With Randle being out due to injury, Toppin closed the season out on a high note. All that he needs is to be given the green light, but again, with Randle on the roster, that isn’t going to happen. Something’s going to have to give.

Some fans said that Toppin should be off limits, but here’s a reply that stood out:

Personally, would I like to see Toppin receive more playing time for New York next season? Without a doubt. It’d be tough to accept that he no longer plays for the Knicks, but the team’s not going to get by with throwing picks in Utah’s direction.

So, it might be best to go ahead and prepare to say goodbye to Obi now. But again, a trade could never materialize, and in that case, he should still be on the roster next year.

But that was before Woj reported that the Jazz were willing to listen to Mitchell trade talks, although that should’ve been a given. It’s hard to believe that at the age of 25, Mitchell would choose to ride out his contract in Utah after the Gobert trade.

Most seem to want Randle out of the way so that Toppin can get more playing time, and then there are those who want Randle gone, period.

Those wishes may come true if the Jazz want Randle. The 27-year-old closed out the regular season by saying that he wanted to stay in New York, and there hasn’t been much said about him during the offseason, but <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2022/07/13/ranking-7-knicks-players-trade-donovan-mitchell/"https://dailyknicks.com/2022/06/07/julius-randle-offseason-workout-photo-sparks-huge-response-knicks-twitter/">a photo of him working out recently made its rounds on Twitter.

If he’s poised to have a bounce-back season, it might end up taking place in Utah. And instead of remembering Randle’s performance during the Knicks’ run to the playoffs in 2020-21, most fans will instead think about the downfalls of 2021-22.

The Knicks will likely have to give up a bit more than Randle and Fournier in terms of players, but that’s a start.

With the Fournier trade rumors, it was thought that he’d be sent to Dallas if a sign-and-trade deal materialized for Brunson, but that ended up not being the case.

And now, all signs seem to be pointing towards the 3-point shooter leaving the Knicks after one season. Either that or he’ll be coming off the bench. But if New York goes after Mitchell to start at the two spot, there will be less of a need for Fournier, which is why him leaving wouldn’t be so bad. His shooting would have to be replaced, though.

That brings us to the end. If the Knicks are serious about going after Mitchell, which is reportedly the case, they’ll have to throw in a few of these players along with picks. New York’s rotation is already going to look different with Brunson in the mix, but it could end up looking a lot different than it does right now.

Is Mitchell going to come home and play for the Knicks?
