Carmelo Anthony, NY Knicks.
Looking further than just NY Knicks basketball, the last year has been incredibly unique, strange, unfortunate, and even wonderful for just about everyone on the planet. Many conflicting emotions and events have occurred, that’s life for you.
We’re all well aware of this. Very few years, if any, have been like 2020. The effects of it are still being felt today. It quickly became a running “joke” about 2020 being the worst year ever, feeling like the end of the world as we knew it.
Leave it to the New York Knicks, who for many years have been apocalyptically bad more often than not, to have somehow had one of the franchise’s greatest years in its history between late 2020 and now.
The Knicks are good… maybe it really is the end of times.
As you’re also likely aware, the Knicks just clinched the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, cementing their first playoff berth in 8 years. The journey this team has been on has certainly meant everything to their fans. It’s even possible that they have been able to inspire many people who needed a feel-good story in these confusing times.
Any Knicks fan will tell you that 8 years have felt like a lifetime to wait for this moment. Regardless of how long it has felt like it’s been, the world has definitely changed since 2013.
So let’s discuss how.
The following slides will give a brief history of how the world has changed since the Knicks were last in the NBA playoffs. In slide one, I will touch on what the knicks looked like back then. Next will be a breakdown of how the NBA was 8 years ago. And finally, a slide will be dedicated to some of the more fun and interesting facts about the world during that time in terms of pop culture, among other things.
As I think Clyde might say, let’s unwind and rewind back to the 2012-13 season.

NY Knicks: A rewind to 2013

Many comparisons have been made between the 2020-21 and the 2012-13 New York Knicks. There are a couple of such articles that have recently been written here at Daily Knicks, and I’m sure there will be many more similarities to draw in future articles.

For now, I will focus solely on the latter. So, how were those Knicks different?

The NY Knicks’ executive was Glen Grunwald and the team was lead by Head Coach Mike Woodson, who was serving his first full season at the position. The team finished 54-28, 1st in their division and 2nd in the East. They defeated the Boston Celtics in 6 games in round one of the playoffs but fell to the Indiana Pacers in as many games during the EC Semi-Finals.

The team captains were Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire. Anthony finished his all-star season <a href=https://dailyknicks.com/2021/05/18/ny-knicks-how-world-changed-last-playoff-berth/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/anthoca01.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener" ref="nofollow">as the league’s top scorer (28.7 PPG) and 3rd in MVP voting. He also made the All-NBA Second Team.

JR Smith took home the league’s Sixth Man of the Year Award while Tyson Chandler made the All-Defensive First Team. Chandler also made his lone All-Star Game appearance.

The NY Knicks’ only rookie was the 28-year-old Chris Copeland. Anthony is the only member of that team who is still on an NBA roster. Most of those players are retired or have been out of the league for several seasons. Smith and Chandler, along with Iman Shumpert and Raymond Felton, are all unsigned NBA free agents.

Rasheed Wallace and Jason Kidd played their final NBA seasons as a part of that team, while fan favorites like Steve Novak, Kenyon Martin, and Pablo Prigioni all went on to retire from the league in the coming years.

NY Knicks: Rewind to the 2012-13 NBA

It is remarkable how the landscape of any professional sport can change in just one offseason. In many ways, the NBA 8 years ago is unrecognizable, but it is also in many ways ironically very similar.

The San Antonio Spurs were defeated by the Miami Heat in the 2013 NBA Finals. It was the second straight championship for the “Big 3.” That series gave us one of the biggest moments in NBA history; Ray Allen’s corner three in Game 6 that forced overtime and kept the Heat alive to eventually win the series.

James won his fourth MVP that season and his second Finals MVP. The title was Chris Bosh’s second and Dwayne Wade’s third. Bosh was just announced as a member of the 2021 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class this past weekend. This came during the commencements of Knicks broadcaster Mike Breen, and NBA legends Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and the late Kobe Bryant into the 2020 class.

During the 2012-13 season, Duncan was on that Spurs Finals team. It was his only Finals loss. Garnett made his final all-star appearance that year, and it turned out to be his final year as a Celtic, too. Bryant dragged the disappointing Los Angeles Lakers to the West’s 8th seed. This was also the season in which he famously tore his Achilles, made two free throws, and walked off the court on his own. The Lakers lost in the first round without him.

In 2013, Kevin Durant, now a certified NY Knicks villain and Brooklyn Net, was still a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder, alongside current Nets teammate James Harden, and Russell Westbrook. His other Brooklyn teammate and Co-Villain Kyrie Irving was just a sophomore on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Irving made his all-star debut in 2013. Both Irving and Durant had not yet won a ring.

Dwight Howard and Rajon Rondo were still in their primes and led the league in rebounds and assists per game, respectively. Damian Lillard won Rookie of the Year and was joined by Anthony Davis and Bradley Beal on the All-Rookie 1st Team. Stephen Curry had not yet changed the league forever, while Harden, Irving, Kawhi Leonard, and Paul George were all ascending to stardom.

8 years ago, the New Orleans Pelicans were the Hornets, the Charlotte Hornets were the Bobcats, and the Philadelphia 76ers were just a year away from the dawn of “The Process” and winning a league-low 19 games. The Cavs, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Sacramento Kings all sucked. Some things never change.

NY Knicks: A rewind to pop culture in 2013

Of course, there were many huge moments in sports from 2013. Super Bowl XLVII (47) experienced a blackout before the Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers. Alabama won the 2013 College Football National Championship but lost to Auburn in the 2013 Iron Bowl on a last-second kick return. Also in College Football, Johnny Manziel took the sport by storm at Texas A&M while Jameis Winston won the Heisman Trophy.

The Boston Red Sox won the 2013 World Series in Boston, bringing joy back to the city that experienced the Boston Bombing earlier that year. A ton of other unfortunate events were tied to sport in 2013, such as Kevin Ware’s leg injury, the cheating scandals for Lance Armstrong, Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, and the criminal sagas of Aaron Hernandez and Oscar Pistorius.

In popular culture, Sony and Microsoft launched their newest video game consoles, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto V, arguably the most successful video game of all time. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X were released this past year, while GTA 6 still has not been announced (*pouts aggressively*).

Apple came out with the iPhone 5C and 5S. Twitter became a public company on September 12th, 2013, with shares selling for just $26. Twitter also introduced Vine, the wildly viral video app. Vine was short-lived, but clearly had an influence on later apps Tik-Tok.

The top blockbusters included Iron Man 3, The Wolf of Wall Street, and American Hustle. Even Sharknado was a successful film. In Television and streaming, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black exploded in popularity while Breaking Bad came to its final season.

Drake’s album “Nothing Was the Same” debuted. Miley Cyrus went crazy and popularized twer-… let’s actually not talk about that.

Selfies were the world’s biggest trend. The internet gave us the “Harlem Shake,” Gallon-Smashing, and Doge, while teaching us the many things that a Fox says.

Needless to say, the Knicks last made the playoffs when the organization, the league, and the world was very different. Let’s hope that as the world continues to change, one of the constants becomes the success of the orange and blue.
